I had a dream that there were fish in my front yard in their fish tanks but then they turned into cats and they started to get out of the water and walk around the front yard. There were so many of them I lost count.

In my world, fish in any dream = pregnancy (in your family or close circle). And it's weird, because the old ladies in my family just make you want to roll your eyes at them, but a few days later, we always find out somebody was pregnant and was trying to hold back on the news.
Also, in the superstitious south, snakes=death. Luckily, I don't have that dream too much.

Could you be pregnant? Lots of fertility going on in this dream. If not pregnant, perhaps "pregnant" with creativity, some new business taking place... the key here is multiplying. Fish often symbolize deep subconscious activity since they are associated with the element of water. Deep within the womb of the ocean fish can give birth to a whole school of baby fishies. If not a literal child, perhaps this could represent your ideas and dreams...that are just waiting to hatch.
The were in a fish tank... hmmm... do you feel trapped? perhaps overly scrutinized? Put on display?
Now on to the cats... Cats are one of those animals that are either adored or despized... how you feel about cats will make a difference to what they mean. On a whole, cats are also symbols of intuition (not too surprising you have found them in a fish dream), and often sexual power. The fish became many cats in your dream and began walking out of the fish tank. To me this is saying that you will find freedom of your own "fish bowl" and scrutinized life by following your intuition..gut instincts.. and expressing your more animal nature.

Seeing animals generally in your dreams usually signifies your physical characteristics, your base desires and your sensual nature.
Seeing fish swimming signifies good fortune, personal wealth and possible power coming your way. However you say you saw them in tanks and that suggests that everything is being limited by some unseen factor.
Then you say that you saw the fish change in to cats, this is an interesting transition as the interpretation of cat is very much dependent on how you feel about cats. I am assuming that you like cats and therefore I believe that this signifies your independent spirit and you feminine sensuality.
You also say that the cats got out of the tanks and started to walk free.

Fish can represent financial provision. Fish being in a tank represent provision which is being nurtured until maturity or held captive. The fish turning into can represent that something that you are watching or taking care of is about to multiply and be most costly to take care of. And since cats have feet, it will be harder to monitor and keep control of.

I don't have an answer but, that's weired I had a very similar dream. There was only one it was my daughters fish that had died not to long ago.
