Moses said god came up with the idea to throw rocks at him until he was dead.

Question: Is this the same god that church folks worship today, or is it a different one?

Could it be Moses was mistaken, or even lied?

There are other cases in the Bible where people were killed for minor offenses. How is this stuff rationalized by Bible people still today?

(Yet a slave owner is not punished for beating his slave -- if the slave recovers.)

It would be interesting to get answers from people who used to believe this stuff...and tell me what were you thinking when you did believe?

Christians just cherry-pick from the Bible.

I mean, unless they're part of the Westboro Baptist Church. LOL

God's revelation is always perceived by humans. Humans are prone to misintrepret, make mistakes based on their own bias, etc. The Bible records our gradual discovery that there is a Greater Power than ourselves and our growing understanding of what that means. The Bible also contains many different types of literature and needs to be understood in the context that it was written. Scholars can spend a lifetime and only scratch the surface of what is recorded and what it means.

God has different ways of teaching His people. Through the OT laws (like stoning) He was trying to teach people what life would be like without grace and forgiveness - "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" - every crime deserved a punishment. Grace and forgiveness are possible only because of the sacrifice of Jesus Who took upon Himself the punishment for sins. Without punishment for sins God would not be a just God in forgiving the sinner.

"For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." (John 1:17).

Keep in mind these laws were given by God Himself, not by Moses. They were only give through Moses. But it is Jesus Who reveals the truth about God not only being a just God but a merciful God by His own sacrifice which made it possible to offer grace to sinners "that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus." (Rom. 3:26).

Yes. Mankind would have perished 3,000 years ago if lawlessness had been acceptable.

Lucky for me, the laws have changed.

Still, I can't fly a kite in Washington DC on Sunday.

Have you ever read any of the NEW Testament??? You know, where Jesus came to earth as a man, and was crucified and died for our sins? Those other laws you mention from the OT became absolete when Jesus died.

Yes it was necessary. They didn't have jails then, where would they put him? Execution was, if not necessary, convenient.
