You should return it while it is under warranty. Depending on where you purchased it, they may just replace the unit.

Could be a few reasons.
The laser pickup needs to be cleaned. A high dust area can cause this very often. A disc lens cleaner is cheap and easy to use.
You may be using recordable discs, which players are more sensitive about. Try checking the operation with store-bought, ROM, discs.
The player may be a cheap brand. I hate to speak bad of Philips/Magnavox, but those are getting returned at a high rate of dissatisfaction. Especially the $30 units. Return it for a refund and buy a different brand.
The player may have gone defective. This is the reason why warranties are given. They shouldn't go defective but occasionally they do. Return it and by the same or different brand.

It's having problems reading the disc and is probably a defect with the product, considering that it is brand new. Most electronics have a warranty, so return it to the store where it was purchased. They may want to attempt a repair before giving you a brand new one, which you must allow them to do if it says so in the warranty, but if after one repair attempt it is still not fixed you should deman a replacement or refund.
Read you warranty first to know what it covers and what you are allowed to ask for.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Your DVDs are Region 1 & we use region 2. If you do a search for dvdunlocker you can download a programme that lets you make your player multi region so that it will play any DVD from all over the world. the download costs about a tenner & is well worth it cos you could get your money back by unlocking your pal's players for a small fee.

That happened with my Cd player.. it turned out the lazer reader was dirty. (although i can't understand how this could happen with your because it is new) You could try putting a CD laser cleaner disc in there and see if it works.
