I have a 2000 civc that runs fine, it will be paid off next year. I've been thinking of buying a 2nd car to use as a back up, just in case the one I have breaks down for some reason or whatever. If for some reason or another my car was in the shop I'd be screwed and I don't like asking other people for rides or favors. I could also drop rental car coverage off my insurance. This car is going to be very lightly driven but I just don't want something to be more trouble then its worth.

Well you need to think about this. If you get another car how much is your insurance going to up having two vehicles? It will be more than the rental insurance.

Ok, you get the beater. Odds are since it is a beater it will need some sort of service at some point. What if it breaks down? Plus you are adding in another set of taxes, registrations, tags, county sticker, etc. Hardly seems worth it.

If you car breaks down you can just get a rental. The money that you didn't spend will pay for it. If it doesn't break down you still have the money. Plus there aren't a lot of repairs that take over a day or two at the most.

Weigh the costs.

No back up beater.
1. Insurance for rental car
2. Way to get rental office (though places like enterprise will drop off the car for you)

Back up beater.
1. Car still needs to be maintained.
2. Yearly Insurance costs
3. Yearly Registration costs
4. Initial cost
5. Costs for the repairs needed for the beater.

If you're concern is about saving money, a back up beater may not be the way to go. if your main concern is not having to ask other people for rides or favors, then a back up car will do the job.

You'd be paying insurance on a car that you would only use once in a while. Would that be worth it to you? A 2000 civic is a pretty trouble-free car and should not be in the shop that much.

If you really wanted a second beater car, get an older model Toyota or Honda, something that would have low insurance and maintenance costs. Look on Autotrader.com.

I hear what you're saying. We have a 2nd car like that too. Just in case. Got it for cash off of craigslist.org for $580! LOL. The insurance didn't add very much for liability on it. But we know we always have a ride to work if something happens to our first car. Plus we use it when we're going places like fishing or taking my dog somewhere. I don't think its a bad idea, works for me just fine.

HONDA VEHICLES ARE VERY RELIABLE AND GETTING A SECOND VEHICLE WILL IN THE LONG RUN COST YOU MORE.

DON'T DROP RENTAL BECAUSE IT COST VERY LITTLE AND I BELIEVE THAT IF YOU DROP IT YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET IT BACK ON.
