EMT/paramedic is exciting... Lights sirens and all that. But the money and the demand is not that great. Most emergency workers that I know have 2 or more jobs. I started as an EMT. I loved it! But, I could not find a job. I tried to get in a course to become paramedic, and could not get in. All the locals were needing to become a paramedic, too. The system was changing. So they got in first. So I went to nursing school. Best thing I have ever done in my life (except for my marrying my wife)! I love it even more than EMT. I am in the operating room, and would do nothing else!! You can survive on a nursing salary, too! Mortgage and food. It's wonderful. As an EMT I would have had to choose between one or the other!

RN there are risks being a nurse but EMTs are the ones who are the first responders. Unless your a nurse in the emergency room you will pretty much know what your patients health issues are. EMTs are the first there so you never know whats going on with an individual. I know EMTs who love their job so if you like being out in the field then EMT. Nursing courses can be brutal. My friend is in her last year of her nursing program and she said this has been the toughest semester. But don't let that stop you, If you like sciences and math then it might be a great field for you, plus my motto is if thousands of other people can do it then so can I. They make great incomes and you can always work per-Diem on the side plus you'll always find a job. A lot of universities and two year colleges offer nursing information sessions, you might want to start there. Good Luck.

Everyone is correct that as a RN you will have more opportunities available to you than if you were an EMT. But if you like the kind of work that EMTs do, that emergency medicine / ICU angle, consider becoming an RN who works as a Flight Nurse. Do some research - they have a really cool job!

RN's make more money and are more specialized. Atleast if you choose to be an RN you can somewhat decide what you want to see. Being a paramedic you can see a lot more horrific situations then that who is stationed in a hospital ward. On the other side, if you like being more fast paced then a paramedic would be the job for you. You never know what will happen next.

I would chose RN because I did. EMT's might have a slightly more exciting career but they don't get paid as well. I can do more things than an EMT but there are somethings that they can do that I am not licensed to do. You could always start as an EMT and then bridge over to RN. Many, Many more opportunities as an RN.

EMTs here just have a minimal amount of training whereas Paramedics have extensive training in emergency medicine.
If I were to choose for a career, I would choose the RN route for job security and inside work. Not as many crazed killers in a hospital.

It depends on the amount of action you want and the amount of time you want to spend in university. Paramedics are the
first on scene and usually have the most amount of action. With a nurse yes you have action but mostly your just helping out the Dr's when the patient comes in from the ambulance.
I think if anything if you have the brains becoming a Doctor
would have the best of both worlds but does come with extreme hours and well not much of a social life. Hope this helps you figure out what you want to do. If you want to take care of people then I would recommend a care aid.

Hello:

Nursing is the way to go,because good nurses are in HIGH DEMAND and some hospitals are so desperate for good nurses that they offer REALLY BIG MONEY BONUSES,to sign on and work with that hospital!

In today's society if you are a nurse that is a RN,you can pretty much name what you want your pay to be in your wages and you can name what department you would like to work in such as maternity,ER,etc... Nursing is ALOT of hard work, but it is so worth it when you touch peoples lives each and every day with an understanding smile or hug and help those patients to feel so much better! ;-)
