Should NASCAR forget about this silly top 35 in points nonsense and figure out a different way to qualify for a race? I think it stinks that the top 8 qualifying for this past weekend were go or go home guys. They claim it is to protect their sponsors that have been loyal to the sport, not that I am a huge MWR fan, but what about UPS & NAPA? Valvoline, Dominos, and Marathon to name a few more. What about the others that are trying to break into the sport such as 360 OTC, Red Bull and State Water Heaters. I propose that all cars/teams registered for the race make their 2 qualifying laps as normal, the top 20 get a free pass into the race and the rest run out in 2 20 lap qualifier/heat races to fill the remaining 23 spot in the field. The only time that season points would come into play is during the rare occasion that weather prevents the normal event of qualifying. In those instances the current rule would prevail.
Thoughts?

I absolutely HATE the top 35 rule. Let all the drivers be go or go home. Then qualifying actually means more than getting to race the Bud shootout. If Jeff Gordon spins during qualifying, he misses the race. Wouldn't hurt my feelings any. Makes Saturdays that much more important to the Championship picture that way. Oh, and then the fastest 43 cars are racing on Sundays...
Maybe there could be room for a little modification to that - give each driver one provisional start. If for some reason he spins out in qualifying, he could still race providing that his practice speeds were in the top 35 or so...
hmmmmmmmm
guess I am glad I am not on NASCAR rules committee

Yes NASCAR should scrap the top 35 rule for qualifying but racing in is not the answer. That's just a lot more work and wrecked cars for the teams that are struggling anyway. I think they should have a few provisionals for teams based on the previous year's results. That, along with the past champion's provisionals, would at least allow some assurances for the teams that do well consistently. There are too many full time teams to only allow for 7 or 8 teams getting in on time for each race. The other thing they could do is have everyone that doesn't have ANY provisionals qualify at the same time, either the beginning or the end, so that it is fair for all the teams in the same boat.

They need to come up with something different than the way it is now. There are too many cars fighting for just 8 spots. They could make it the top 20 in points are in and the other 23 spots would be for getting in on their time. I'm not sure that is the answer but it would be better than it is now.

yes they do need to change the way qualifying is.lets say the top 30 get in on time and the other 13 have a 25-50 lap race with a mnaditory green flag stop...before lap 40..and the top 12 get in and as for the other one...the most resent champion is in...or the next highest on time that didnt race there way in

Dayyam truer words have not been spoken here in a long time.
I've been against this top 35 B.S. since it started and this weekend proved it blows.
And while we're at it get rid of the dayyam provisionals also.
NO FREE RIDES.
THE FASTEST 43 RACE.

sad isn't it? nascar is saying they don't want the 43 fastest cars in the running, they want the 43 top paint jobs, disgusting!!!, there shouldn't need to be any provisional, top 12? the top 12 will be their anyways, if you want to have pre season entry registration and say the first 43 get in fine, at least this way the top quality guys who aren't going to race can start applying for the jobs that will let them,
personally i disagree, i say let every one run their qualifying laps and the top 43 make it, the end, no exceptions because you have taco bell on the hood or state farm insurance

I think top 20 or 25 should have a spot and after that its all up for grabs.
As for rain delays they need to figure out something about that, because teams are going home that didn't even have a chance.

I like your idea. I suggested something similar in the past and got shot down. This would be more like stock cars roots - the way that they race on a Sat. night. It would be nice to see some of these guys like Boris Said get a chance at racing.

I think your right about getting rid of the top 35 in points, but if they did use your idea I think it would take way to long.

The rules in nascar are getting more and more like our government.. just too damn nosy and invasive to the sport. Back out !!! Lets let the racers do what the racers do best. And hey while I am at it lets go BACK to racing to the Yellow flag. I hate this lucky dog crap!
