"Nut" means a circle. Like a nut that goes on a bolt.

Hence the doughnut as we know it:)

Early settlers in the US discovered fried cakes (fried dough/doughnuts) as a good staple food because it is easy to make & could last awhile. However, they could never get the middle to cook completely and some settlers would become ill after eating the uncooked center dough. So around 1847, Elizabeth Gregory made these fried dough cakes for her son & shipmates for long voyages, but she would place a hazel nut or walnut in the center where the dough does not cook all the way - hence doughnut.

most ppl wonder that , so there you go!

What a fun question. I looked it up, and from what I gather, they orginally were just little balls of fried dough that looked like nuts (like walnuts and pecans, not the testicular variety).

Because they are round with a hole in the middle like a "nut" that goes on a "bolt"

Some places make the outside hex-shaped like a hexnut...

Testicular Variety. byahahhahahaha.

Perhaps they're called doughnuts because the pillsbury doughboy was castrated pre-commercials era and they did it via shot gun- leaving a void where the testicles should have been.
