A Howitzer is not a gun. It is less than 25 caliber lengths{25xbore diameter} The main difference is the angle of fire. A gun is flat, and a howitzer is capable of high angle fire. Important if the bad guys are on the reverse slope. The howitzer was designed for supporting ground troops in the attack and defense of positions. The 88mm German flak gun was just that, air defense. The 88mm was also a antitank weapon when mounted on a tank. If you are interested in artillery, look up the howtar. It was a unholy marriage of a 75mm pack howitzer body with a 4.2 inch mortar tube.

First, a Howitzer is a type of gun used by ALL nations: A howitzer is a type of artillery piece that is characterized by a relatively short barrel and the use of comparatively small explosive charges to propel projectiles at trajectories with a steep angle of descent.

Basically, it falls between a GUN (flat shot) and a MORTAR (higher angle shot).

SO, a Howitzer is used to lay down an artillery barrage, normally on a defensive position prior to an advance. It could be towed behind a truck or mounted on an armoured chassis.

The German 88mm Flak was developed as an anti-aircraft gun, but was found to be unbeatable in the Anti-Tank role, and was later installed in German Tanks as the MAIN gun.

A howitzer is an indirect-fire artilery piece, used to attack at long range or to drop shells behind fortifications. The German 88 was designed as anti-aircraft artillery, but also, due to it's great muzzel-velocity and range, found use as an anti-tank weapon.
