If I think I'm hearing God's voice, how can I be sure that it's His voice, and not my mind hallucinating?

Please do not answer this question if you're an atheist, otherwise I will give you a thumbs-down.

Tuberoot, thank you for the very informative answer. You said, "I am not being very helpful to you" - but actually you were very helpful.

You said, "So you heard His voice when you responded to Him before. You know what it is like." - You're right about that. I've heard His voice in the past, so I do know what it's like.

Honestly, I know that what I heard wasn't a hallucination: The voice was very clear and precise, unlike an abstract hallucination. I guess I was wanting to believe the voice was a hallucination because... I'm in trouble and afraid to face reality; I was in denial, basically.

When I log-in tomorrow, I'll be sure to select your answer as the best answer. Thank you and God bless!

Sometimes you won't even know. But afterwards you will wonder. And at other times you will hear that you completely empowered another person. And others will look at you differently.

I am sorry, I am not being very helpful to you, because I am referring more to what it's like afterwards.

But this I know- that God gives you the indications as you are open to Him. He makes His will as present and noticeable as you need it to be - He knows how much you need. I can say this because He has used me for many things, and has guided me up to this day doing what I am doing now. Communicating to people with questions.

So you heard His voice when you responded to Him before. You know what it is like. If you find yourself out of contact with Him, I find that for me it is because I have allowed too much background noise to occupy my thoughts and time.

For this reason I have strayed away from family, and spent more time without others around me. I seek solitude to be with God. And the pay-off is enormous.

You know when Jesus said this:
Luke 14:26
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple." ?

I think that's what he meant. We start feeling lonely even though all those people are around us. The loneliness is due to our spirit being called by God to respond to Him. And yet all those people keep forcing the cares of this world- the details of their lives in our life, and the whole time we just need to get away and respond to the calling that God is putting in our hearts.

As long as we ignore that calling - we are feeling incomplete, and not fulfilled.

So go to it! Answer God. It's time in these days that God's Spirit is drawing us apart from the world. This life cannot continue on forever! And in these Last Days the kind of life which is considered 'normal' may not be what God has in mind.

Weigh all of what I said on His Spirit.

Forget about god ... recognize the voice inside you ... if there is a voice of god, that's the likely voice.

God is STILL and Silent. The Holy Spirit can interpret in the mind and uses the same things that the ego uses.

Ummm...I thought the Voice of God is so powerful that you would die as soon as God spoke, so if you are asking a question like this, then it means you are not dead. So I guess you are seeing and hearing things.

Why not give atheists equal response time. Let them have their input too. It gives others a chance to see the folly of their belief structure.

It is the voice that comes from deep within you not within your head.

Whatever you are being told, go to the Bible.

If it contradicts what is in the Bible, it is NOT from God!

God Bless!
