i just bought a bass and have been experimenting with slapping but everytime I try to slap, I hear a snap and I cannot hear the note of my string. How do I make the string sound good without hearing any snap?

slapping just takes practice, if you know the basic technique you just need to practice heaps and wait until you get the hang of it. Im not a bass player myself, but the Bassist in my band has been teaching herself to slap for about 6 months and can only get a really nice sound out of two strings (lol) but shes getting better.... one string at a time >.<

It's hard to tell what you are doing wrong without being able to see what you are doing. I strongly suggest buying a slap bass instructional DVD by Alexis Sklarevski. It is considered the slap bass 'bible', and it starts you on square one. Have fun!

Bass slapping is just like masterbation - the guy doing it is the only one getting any enjoyment out of it. It's just an embarassment for anyone else around.
