my family were not bad, some of them are really religious but most were agnostic until they spent a few hours with me around the dinner table, and the rest well they are now agnostic, so its a step in the right direction.
All my kids came back from school saying God was real, but I showed them the evidence of Jesus and they are all now Atheists, sorry no my second daughter J is agnostic ( I have just been told)

I was about fourteen when I told my parents that I wasn't going to church with them any more . Mom asked why , so I told her those sermons just didn't add up with me.
Her answer was , " You're very intelligent , you heard the stories over and over , I know that you've given it a lot of thought . If you're not convinced by now , there's no sense in forcing you to hear more of the same ".
That was the end of church for me except funerals and weddings.

I told them when I was 15 and they weren't phased in the least. I think they got a clue to what I didn't believe when I walked out of the middle of my baptism when I was 12.

Dude, being Atheist isn't like being gay. There's no 'coming out of the closet' There's no bloody broken homes over it. You just say "Eh, I don't believe in all that nonsense, here's why." And they're like "I do believe in this, and here's why." and you're both comfortable with the other's position.

I haven't told them, my parents are in their 80's and not the best health to put it mildly. The last thing they need is addition self imposed stress. If they asked, I'd have to tell them but hopefully they won't.

Me being an Atheist was the least of their worries.

They didn't go crazy or anything - we just agreed to disagree on our beliefs. Then again, we are a very secular family. I wonder what would have happened if my parents were fanatical fundamentalists.

It depends on the person. My dad is very understanding and accepting and my mother doesn't know yet because she is the opposite of understanding and acccepting at times.

When I told them what?

I'm a skeptic and a cynic. My family accepts me for who I am. A caring person that takes everything apart to see how it works. When I took religion apart I found out it didn't work at all.

My family, being literate, had no objections as long as I spelled "atheist" correctly.
