The Ruger SP 101 is a great weapon I have one with the 2.25 inch barrel in 357 Magnum. It handles the full power magnums and let's me practice with 38 specials to conserve resources. This revolver is very accurate out to 25 yards and is a pleasure to shoot. Read these reviews of the weapon and hold one in your hand and it will be love at first sight. I got mine for $390.00 + tax.

I can already see the thumbs downs adding up on this one..I would suggest you look into buying a good Used Smith & Wesson 686 in Stainless steel with a 4" or 6" barrel. They are just about indestructable, double action AND single action..As a 357 it can handle any presently available Magnum ammunition and of course you can also shoot 38 Special too. I like the Ruger as well but 26+ years as a LEO/Detective, and 16+ Years as a Combat Pistol Instructor, have taught me that Smith & Wesson is the one I trust my life too.I guess professionally now, that still rings true..Handguns are like cars you can buy a model that can be affordable to most anyone's budget... Problem is it seems that the less expensive a handgun is, you seem to always give something up for the sake of a few dollars. When it comes to quality handguns I think this is an investment that can justify a few extra dollars to get the best..rather than settle.Just my professional opinion.....

I recommend the Ruger SP101 (it's a 5 shot). It was my second handgun, after I had owned a Glock 19. The SP101 is a .357 Magnum and is one of the most durable pistols out there. It is heavier than other snubs, but I consider that a plus as it absorbs more recoil. It comes in 2.25 inch barrels and 3 inch barrels. It also is made in other calibers as well.
Here is a link to the various models:
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdResults?function=famid&famid=9&variation=Satin%20Stainless&bct=Yes&type=Revolver
MSRP is around $530 to $550...I found it on sale. The out the door price was $455. It's a great revolver..you will not be disappointed.
If you are not looking for a snub nose then I would recommend the Ruger GP100, comes in 3, 4, and 6 inch barrels (and is a 6 shot).

I agree about the Rugers being good and tough. The Smith and Wessons are about the smoothest and slickest out of the box that you can get. They also cost quite a bit more. My wife has a GP-100 and she wouldn't trade it for anything. It's action is smoother now and better than when she bought it 15 years ago. For general purpose revolvers, the .357 is hard to beat.

Look at the Ruger GP100 in a 4 inch barrel... It is a .357/.38sp, a little beefier than the Smiths or Taurus. The grip is a little thicker too. They run about 500 to 550 or so but it is worth the extra $$$. Otherwise you can get just a .38 sp and they might run about 450 or so.

Try a .22 long rifle caliber. Ammo is very cheap, and they're a lot of fun to shoot. I think the Taurus Model 94 and the Charter Arms Pathfinder are between $300-$400.

Ruger if you want one brand new for that price, they make quality revolvers
Smith&Wesson if you would like a top of the line revolver in used but not abused condition. Thats what I would go with, never bought a new revolver. I always buy a expensive revolver used lol

In that price range new you're looking at Ruger n Taurus. You're not gonna find a GOOD used Python in THAT price range. I paid $900 for a stainless one w/4" barrel two years ago and more than a thousand for a 'like new' Royal Blue one w/6" barrel last year.
Best.

Rossi and Taurus sell revolvers in that price range.Taurus has every caliber you can imagine,Rossi has .38 special and .357.I would get a Rossi as they are better from what I hear. You could also get a Ruger Single Six.can fire .22LR and .22 magnum with different cylinders.
