There's AVG Antivirus which is free for personal use, and i've been using it for quite a while now. It's by a company called Grisoft. (my source link has the link to the grisoft site where you can download AVG Free edition or purchase a higher version with more security.)

You don't HAVE TO buy a new one yearly, unless you want to keep up with the newer software.

Many companies offer cheaper "upgrades" for existing software users rather than having to buy a whole new software package at a full price.

For example, the newest version of adobe photoshop may cost (I don't know exactly, i'm just throwing out numbers)... 700 dollars..... But if you have the previous version you may be able to purchase an upgrade package for 350 dollars rather than dropping 700 for a whole new software package.

It all depends on how you want to do it. Newer software usually incorporates new features, patches, fixes, improvements over the previous software, etc.... So it's good to keep up with the new stuff. It isn't exactly necessary, but it's a good idea to do so.

For an Antivirus solution for a home PC, I usually recommend AVG's Free version. Gives you good protection and its free. You can download it at the link below.

As for Microsoft Works needing to be replaced yearly... So long as the program is doing what you need of it, there is no need to replace it. The same goes for just about every piece of software you have. (The notable exceptions being things like Tax software that changes yearly, or accounting software that you are using to prepare payrolls, since payroll taxes change yearly.)

Firstly, NEVER EVER use Norton, it is a well known computer hog and a ***** to uninstall completely. As for free stuff I have used Avast for years and is excellent anti-virus software as updates regularly as new threats are discovered, I still however prefer to manually instal updates as otherwise it can slow the computer down by uploading while you are using it. As for a firewall I have Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall which also has a home edition which is free. I have never had a problem of any sort. Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE personal is also another program worth having. All are free.

Okay, I am going to give you a LOT of very good tips here...

(1) Never use Internet Explorer (IE) to browse websites - your computer will be infected with a virus in under 15 minutes if you do so

(2) Never use Outlook for you emails - your computer will be infected with a virus in under 5 minutes if you do so

(3) Download and install Firefox and Thunderbird - use those in place of IE and Outlook

(4) Download and install the following:
Comodo Antivirus
Comodo Firewall
Comodo BOCclean

any other Comodo security products you may want

They are all free and are all in the top 2 of each field for anti virus, anti trojan and firewall protection.

(5) Download and install AdAware

(6) You can also download free trials for CounterSpy and XoftSpy and sweep your system fully to make doubly sure you did not pick up anything before installing these softwares.

(7) Replace Microsoft Works with OPEN OFFICE - this is totally free and gives you all the same tools and stuff

You don't need to replace Microsoft Works unless you want. Besides, there are free web applications like Google Docs and OpenOffice.org that do the exact same thing for free.

There are free anti-viruses too. The most popular one is AVG.
http://free.grisoft.com/
It's a fully functional anti-virus. It's free, but there's nothing to worry about how well it will protect your computer from viruses.

A good guideline for programs like works, quicken ... is three years before replacing.
There is a free 90 day trial of Microsoft OneCare (anti-virus). I used the free trail and loved it enough to buy it. The cost isn't bad either. It is truely a "One Care" it helps run all the other maintance things you should be doing too.

Google avg/grisoft. It works, and you'll like the price--- free!
Yes, you do have to buy Norton every year, it;s like a magazine subscription. It must be renewed.
If you just use a computer for the basics, it will do the job.

Good luck!

I have yet to fine any compelling evidence that payware antivirus is any superior to freeware.

Check around for Avast, AVG, Antivir, etc. These are all free versions that will serve you well without hogging your computer like Norton.

Our local cable network Time Warner furnishes the complete 2007 package of CA anti-spam, anti-virus,anti-spy-ware and firewall absolutely free.
I chose it install a Linsky's highspeed wireless broadband G router so that I could use it's firewall instead of the CA furnished (firewall) product.
Everything's working perfect!

AVG is a really good free program to use for personal computers. Here is the link:

You shouldn't have to renew Works. Once it is installed and activated, it will be there permanently.
