I really want to get a puppy, should i get a teacup poodle (I know its not the origional name) or should I get a yorkie? I have a 12 year old daughter and a little toddler. The 12 year old will be taking care of the dog most of the time so not a real ruff one. PLEASE HELP!!!!

we also have a rat, the toddler know that she is NOT allowed to touch it. Not that a rat is anything like a dog. Im sure the baby can learn. We have a nanny 24/7 and she is always with the toddler so there will be no abuse to the dog from the baby

i think you should really look into the breed before you get a small dog. especially a poodle. they tend to be very nippy with small children. Try going for something a bit bigger because small dogs gets easily frightened by children and attack. Yorkies are the same too

I have to say no 12 year old really takes care of a dog full time. They HELP. So if YOU are willing to handle all the training and needs of a small dog go for it, but its a lot of money time and patience.

Also you need to pick the right dog. A dog that can tolerate children and won't be frightened so you need to really talk to the breeder, or rescue or where ever you choose to adopt from.

If you need any advise email me I know tons of people with small pets that you can talk to and I even own three small dogs with a 5, 7, and 10 year old living with me.

Also you may not want to go for a puppy but rather an older dog that is already trained they stay tiny so pretty much just like a puppy. Little dogs live into their 20's and its much easier when they come fully trained to a home. Theres no peeing or pooping on the carpet and no chewing up your shoes ... They sit stay whatever already ..

Toys or "teacups" are not good when you have a toddler in the house. If you honestly think your 12 yr.old. daughter will care for it. Think again! You will be the mommy of a 12yr., toddler and a baby. Puppies take a lot of work! Maybe try a slightly older dog (6mos or so) and larger (10lbs.). Still small but will not get crushed by your toddler. We honestly had freinds with a teacup sized dog. They bought a large new house, the dog fell down the stairs and died. They are very fragile.

You may want to look a bit more into the personality of the dogs. Teacup poodles are quite small, and if you let them sleep in the bed, could get injured if your daughter rolls over on it. If you like the fact that the poodle doesn't shed, I'd go for a toy poodle instead. I have one, he's about the right size, and very easy to train. Personality wise - most dogs are the result of how they are trained. I would spend more time researching the breeder to make sure whichever dog you get isn't from a puppy mill. Those dogs are more likely to have medical problems and a shorter lifespan.

eee, gads...
I cannot stand the "don't get a small dog" with small children. IF your children are VERY well behaved, then there is no problem. You supervise ANY dog that comes in and how it is treated, no matter what. I have a toy (not teacup, you heard about that enough already (runts)), poodle and when I got her my youngest of four was a "toddler", I also raise, train and show rottweilers (OMG!! A ROTTIE with small kids, aaaahhhh!!!), and you know what? I have NO problems because my dogs are trained, my kids are "trained" and people always have something to say. I had one person tell me she will never sell a toy poodle to anyone with kids under 6, because their legs are like chopsticks if dropped. Well, I have puppies occassionally and my kids are in the whelping box as they are born, with a rottie, and have yet to have one drop a pup while drying it off, etc...The poodle is dressed up and pushed in a doll stroller, but that is the extent of her "abuse" by my daughter. So, really get what YOU want, you are the one taking care of it and of the two, poodles are generally healthier and easier to housetrain. Your 12 year old can help, maybe get her a dogs for dummies book, not saying she is dumb, obviously, but they are good informative books for beginners....

also neither breeds are nippy if raised and socialized correctly, yorkies are a little more verbal, but you can tell them just as easily to be quiet.

ONLY get a dog if you or your nanny are going to be taking care of the dog. 12 year olds really don't do what they say they are going to do.. They get busy, or get having fun and the dog suffers..
They have no clue how to housetrain or anything else and then you are stuck with an out of control dog that is not trained at all.. And you will be writing and asking where you can find a home for the dog cause the 12 year old isn't doing what she said she would do.... Happens all the time..

Does it have to be tiny?
I wouldnt particularly reccomend a very small dog with toddlers around, but it's your choice.
If I were you, I would probably go for the toy poodle out of the two - my friend has one and it's lovely!
Small dogs tend to be a bit yappy, but you can train them out of this. If you want help with training when you get it, then buy 'The Perfect Puppy'. Apparently it's a really good guide.
A teacup poodle is an extra-tiny version of the toy poodle. They are not officialy recognised as a seperate breed to the toy poodle, but some breeders advertise them as 'teacup' if they're really tiny.
Teacup poodles do have health problems, so I think you should get a regular toy - they're still small, but not so much to the extent that health problems are such a worry.
Don't limit yourself to looking at tiny dogs - try other breeds too!
Good luck with finding yourself the perfect puppy!

First, there is no such thing as a "teacup" anything - it's a made up term by bad breeders who breed smaller than standard dogs who are often very sickly and frail. If a breeder offers you teacup anything, run away.

Second, very small dogs, like toy poodles and yorkies are a poor choice around toddlers. Small toys are very fragile and can easily be seriously injured by a rough toddler. Wait till your youngest is older - say 8-10 years old before even considering it, or get a larger breed.

DO NOT get a toy breed of any kind with a toddler in the house. These are tiny living things that feel pain and fear.... Ask any Vet about the numbers of toy breeds treated, and even killed by small children simply because the dog is delicate and fragile and the child is too clumsy and doesn't understand the extreme gentile care needed by one of these little dogs. Toddlers have stepped on, fallen on, thrown, sat on........... broken bones, broken necks, broken backs! I'm not just trying to scare you, these are facts! NO TOY breeds with a toddler in the house! Either wait until the child is older, 6-7 years of age, or get a sturdy medium or larger dog. Beagles are great family dogs.

Please don't get a tiny dog with a toddler around. They are far too fragile.
We know someone who has a 3 lb Yorkie/Chi cross. The kids decided to put it up on the bed. Of course it jumped down & now has 2 broken front legs. The poor little thing has each leg casted with a piece that goes over the shoulders.
The vet recommended they put it down, as he's doubtful it will heal properly.
It's so sad, and so totally preventable

You want to get a tiny dog while you have a toddler in the house?
Not the best idea ever. Additionally, "teacup" anythings are not healthy dogs. They are the runt of the litter, marketed as 'teacup' by unscrupulous breeders, and will cost you a fortune at the Vet. They are fragile and easily damaged by toddlers. Spare yourself the heartbreak, and don't give your money to back yard breeders.
Never get a dog unless you are ready for training classes.
