Lumps that are characteristic of a cystic or fibrous nature may be firm, movable, tender, change during different phases of a menstrual cycle, etc. Lumps that are hard, fixed, etc. would of course be more disconcerting.
Mastitis is a bacterial infection in the breast, typically involving a considerable quantity of mammary tissue. A plugged duct is an individual duct that is blocked, swollen and often presents as a hard knot in the breast. A plugged duct can lead to mastitis, but the two are not always presented together.

There is nothing she can do other than what she is already doing. The doctor will examine her, probably send her for a mammogram, and possibly an ultra sound. The mammogram will show if it is a lump or just dense tissue. The doctor will then see her back at his office and decide what to do next. If it is cancer, it can be very curable, so try not to worry. If it makes you feel any better, I had a hard lump on my breast, they were thinking cancer, I went through all the motions, then finally surgery. Come to find out, it was not cancerous at all, it was just dense tissue, like a cyst, that is also very common in woman. My lump was also very tender, and a lot of times if it is tender, it is just a cyst, so try not to worry., All the worrying in the world will not change the out come. Just let the doctor do what he feels is needed, and everything should turn out okay.

My wife had much the same scare. It turned out to be fibrocystic breast disease. The Doctor had her get off caffeine and the problem reduced and effectively went away. Here is a small blurb on it...and I hope this is your Mom's issue.
An estimated 30-50 percent of women have what has often been called fibrocystic breast disease. It is a condition where small lumps and cysts (usually non-cancerous) develop in the breasts. Since this condition is so common, it is not even considered a disease anymore. Most women affected are between the ages of 20-50, usually before menopause starts. These changes in the breast are not a type of cancer and do not necessarily lead to breast cancer.
Good luck,
Z

It might or might not be breast cancer. That's why she's going to to doctor -- to find out.
I found a large tubular lump in my breast in August. It felt like a full milk duct, but I haven't had milk in my breasts for close to 30 years. I scheduled a doctor visit and mammogram for the next week.
Mine turned out to be a fibrous cyst and nothing to be concerned about. The doctor said it's not uncommon for women after menopause to get them.
I hope your Mom's lump is just as simple.

My wife had similar it wasnt a lump but felt like a sinewy knot, she had it for years and when it started to hurt went to the doctor and had a biopsy which detected cancer. She had a major operation lymph glands removed as well and is now fine. That was 7 years ago.The information given by the medical profession telling women to check for lumps is misleading as often it doesnt present itself as a lump and could be a milk duct that calcifies and turns cancerous.I hope your mum,s problem turns out to be something different---best of luck

October 4th is long past....the 14 maybe?
try not to worry, if she has ever breast fed her kids she may have a plugged duct, yep they can happen even after a mom is done nursing her babes. heat may help relax it and if nothign else make her feel like she is doing something.
I knwo its hard not to worry but it could be so many things, something as simple as a cycst or as complex as cancer. cancer is scary and I would worry too, but its not going to help anything, the stress could cause more issues.
For now take tylenol to help the pain, apply heat or cold to it whihever feels better.
Good luck to your mom and your family.

diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound will be able to differentiate, show Shadow spots (possible lesions). Follow up with a core biopsy will give definite diagnosis. After that she will be off to breast cancer specialist for surgery, and treatment.

Going to the doctor and finding out is the best thing she can do - you can't be sure what it is, and the doctor can diagnose it for what it really is.
