They are the best small-animal pet to have, hands down. I have had mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, sugar-gliders, and gerbils, and rats are the friendliest overall, the smartest by far, and the easiest and quickest to tame and they bond readily with people. Great with little kids, too. Awesome pets!

Hi just got into rats after keeping rabbits for years, really since I was a child I think I have had most pets but the rats are fascinating, and now I think they are the best ever, got 3 boys all from different places, because I went round buying the ones on their own I carefully introduced them, and they are all getting on like a house on fire, in my new homemade cage.

I have fallen in LOVE with rats! I've worked with them for years and have 2 girls of my own.
There isn't one bad thing I could say about them as pets. I always suggest a pair of rats when someone says they're looking for a hamster, especially for younger children. Then I tell them all the good qualities about rats that hamsters don't possess. (Well not all of them; that would take a while.)
When people say they hate their tails, I just want to smack them in the face with one. I think their tails are cute and I love when the wrap them around my hands/fingers. Whenever I can, I make people touch them to get over their irrational fear. These rats do not carry the plague.
Glad there are so many rattie lovers out there like me!

I recently lost both my rats, one to pneumonia, and one suddenly to what appeared to be a brain haemorrage. I miss them a lot as I found them to be some of the most entertaining, loveable, and smart pets I've ever had. At this moment in time I'm not getting any more, but I know I'll have some again in the future as they really brighten up your life.

Rats make great pets. They are smart and can learn to come by their names. I think blue rats are the prettiest, especially if they are full blue, but fancy rats are pretty too. Rats are prone to URI (Upper respritory infection) so they need a well ventalated cage and a lot of room. They are alkso social and if you are going to get one make sure you can take it out often. All and all I love them, they can sit on your shoulder while you watch a movie or just sit while you pet them. They rarely bite unless very scared, and are good and sturider for little kids.

Rats are the best. I recently mourned the loss of Rascal, a silver fawn hooded but have now acquired two more, cookie and cream :-)
Cookie is a hooded agouti and cream a cinnamon colour.
My other four are Pip, Squeak, Bubble and Mischief.
I would recommend rats to anyone, they are very playful and love attention. I will never be ratless now, i love them too much!

I've been keeping rats for almost a year and half - most of them rescues. :o)
I used to work at Petco and parents would sometimes ask me what small animal would make the best pet for the family. I almost always got a dirty look when I told them rats are probably the best choice of what we had. Its a shame people can't see past their bad reputation. :o(

I love rats! I've had 7 all together in the past and they were all wonderful and had different personalities....but they were all silly little clowns! I would take one over a hamster, guinea pig, or a bunny ANY day! Sadly, I wont be able to get any more til I move back out of my mom's house...(Littlest brother is allergic)

Well Leann I just got 2 girl rats from my daughter and i Love them. They will not bite you unless by mistake. Unlike gerbils, hamsters or guinea pigs and mice. I reccommed getting a "How to take care of your pet Rat Book" to anyone who aquires a pet rat. They are the sweetest animals and come to you when you call their name.
