Don't know if your friend is of the opposite sex, or not, but either way, there is a certain comfort that develops from relationships over time. Silence is a form of comfort. If a relationship is new or awkward, people feel that they need to talk. Why not try just being silent? Enjoy the moment. Enjoy the peace. If its a member of the opposite sex, hold hands, put arm over shoulder, etc. Silence is a sign of a maturing relationship. BTW, who do you think will stay married or longer? A couple who chats incessantly after 10 years or one that sits in silence at dinner? Statiscally speaking, its the couple who can be silent. They just enjoy the others company without the need to incessantly chat. After 23 year, my husand and I will either sit silently, or chat, or laugh. Some of the best times, are when their is silence. Its very healthy.

Joking and Goofing off are my favorites. When you just can't think of any more dialog, that's when you just need to start being silly. is your friend Same or opposite Sex (depending on your sexuality). If you are walking with a friend that your "interested" in, come up with some random silly Game/competition to do together. If it's just a buddy you are walking with, Check out Women/Men together... that alwyas strikes up oppinions and conversation. :)

Don't say anything....there's no reason to speak if you don't have anything to say. Maybe you could just listen for awhile, or enjoy quiet moments together. Really special friendships allow those types of moments which would be uncomfortable in lesser relationships.

"Yeah.......ummm"
"So have you talked to ____?"
~I guess when all else fails I just use the filler words "uh" "um" "yeah" "oh" "ok" and try and make some sort of a meaningful sentence using them.
*Then I laugh at myself because I feel like a jackass*

Nothing. Friends are people you can be quiet with too. I actually like them better than the talker friends.

Have you ever heard the saying, "Silence is golden"? Sometimes it is better not to talk, but to listen to our inner soul.
