Obviously, I am a novice hunter but have never understood this. I know the orange is to avoid being shot by fellow hunters. I assume most game are color blind but if so, why does the color patterns in camo wear matter? Just curious.

Orange is mandated by law.

The camo lines break up your pattern, it isnt about color as much as it is not having one solid color which stands out.

Why do hunters wear camo to disguise themselves and then a bright orange hat or vest?

Hunter Orange Vest

I could write a 10 page essay on this one but I'll try to keep it simple.
You are right about the orange. It is to make you visible to other hunters so you don't get shot. The reason hunters wear camo underneath the orange is to limit the amount of "bright" colors on you that the deer can see. Deer see shades of gray. The brighter the color, the brighter the gray. So the less "bright" colors, the less chance of being spotted. Plus many hunters already have camo for bow season(orange is not required in bow season), so why not use it in gun season.

Hope that helps.

during rifle deer season some states require 20 square inches of safety orange in the field.

Deer are color blind but not shape blind. If you can get orange with a breakup pattern (i've seen it.)

Orange can save you from getting a 30.06 slug in the gut from some of the idiots that carry firearms into the field.

I prefer to hunt locations where the hunter density is very low. Safety Orange can be a plus if you get stranded and someone has to call our rescue.

safety hunter orange is for safety from other hunters so that they see you, camo breaks up your outline helping you blend in with deer studies show that they see blues and purple shades quite well and brightly almost glowing, so dont wear your favorite blue jeans. also use a detergent without UV ultraviolet brightners these will make you literally glow in a deers eyes also

So other hunter can see each other from long distances, deer only see in black and white, so the orange does not stand out to them.
