Why do so many christians on here believe that they wouldn't have got through bad events in their lives without their god? Who told them that they wouldn't be able to do this? Are they all unable to sort out things for themselves without believing an imaginary friend is guiding them?
They are all quick to say that god saved them, but unable to say how.

009: I don't begrudge people this, I do however, think it is sad that these people are considered totally sane.

Jim B: When did your god tell you this? Did he talk to you direct, or was it just words that you read in a book?

We are not taught that we will not have trials and tribulations in this world, we will. He also tells us that He will always be with us.. So this means that at in life's evil moments we aren't alone.. What's the problem with sharing those time with someone who understand and tell us we will make it and be stronger for the passing through those times? Yes God has saved me from death. The second death and given the promise of resurrection and eternal life with Him. That is how! And you say no one has explained this to you before? That is hard to believe.. IHS Jim

Grace and Faith are gifts from God. Without those gifts, it is difficult to believe. Many people only turn to God when bad things happen in their lives; I do not think they believe they cannot sort things out for themselves; I think they look for divine intervention and guidance when a problem arises. I do understand that you are saying about "saving", however, it depends on the Christian denomination you speak of to determine what is meant. For instance, Roman Catholics are baptized within a month after birth, and could obviously not knowingly be saved. However, with the baptism of the Holy Water, they become Christians and are saved. How they handle the rest of their lives, determines how their life will be here on Earth and in the hereafter. That is just my opinion, and of course, supposition, since no one will know God's plan until we meet him. (Other Christian denominations believe that "saving" come at a later time in life.)

>>>Are they all unable to sort out things for themselves without believing an imaginary friend is guiding them? >>>
No. There have been plenty of time in my life where I was able to "sort out things for myself."
Just because we rely on God at some moments, doesn't mean we're incapable of handling things in other moments.
After all, sometimes a baseball team is able to win the game without calling on the closer. Other times, the closer has to come in. It depends on the situation.
I've been in two very bad situations in life that, logically speaking, I had absolutely no business getting out of. I had nothing left at my disposal except prayer.
Well, guess what? Things worked out.

The world is a random, unpredictable place which generates myriad unanswerable questions. If faith in God allows people to reduce the amount of ambient anxiety generated by these unanswerable questions, why not allow them to have it.
I'm sure you, yourself, take a great many things on faith, and have not managed to persuade all of life's mysteries to reveal their deepest secrets.

After 18 years of being a Christian, I can't imagine living without reliance on God. Some people call Christianity a crutch. Well, if so, be it. I love my crutch and it comes with a jet-pack.

They feel the need to have some sense of greater meaning in their lives, and to feel like someone is watching over them. Don't begrudge them that. :)

A placebo often works in terms of emotional well being as well as in medicine. Belief in something other than oneself can be a powerful thing.
