~Socrates

Good morning, Ty! I've been around. It's nice to see you again. :)

Oh, Mutley, I can't make a correction to something Socrates believed. It just wouldn't be right.

Although I disagree with the term "gods" I do agree with the statement in a monotheistic approach.

If you want less you are more likely to have a desire to help others. If you have this desire and are proactive I feel that you are closer to God as God desires for us to love one another. To help someone in need without desire for repayment is honorable and christ like.

I want to help others in this life. It is the reason I became a nurse before I even knew christ in my life. Once I came to know christ it made my profession and my desire to help people much sweeter. Nothing does my heart better than helping others.

I value life. I value love. I value humanity. I value all things which are good in people.

To want things can be seen as a distraction, lending your brain to desire rather than focusing on the spirit and beliefs... want is a perpetual state that many of us find ourselves in, and advertising and our culture push us away from spirituality and religion... I however admit to wanting lots so am clearly far away from the gods, the closest would be yogis etc. who focus all there energy on wanting nothing only understanding of the divine....

I love the quote. I think if we follow our desires then we should remember that our desires never end. Therefore, we can never reach contentment therefore can never reach peace of mind. My want is to Love others!

It might be related to the Epicurean idea that the gods are largely indifferent to human wants.

As God needs or wants for nothing, and no matter what one does, he can't take any material wealth with him upon death, this is an obvious, but wise, statement.

I want to never bury another child.
I want the good health and prosperity of my husband, kids and loved ones.
I want to retain the ability to laugh.
That's too many 'I want's for one day... Now I feel guilty.
(oh well, my mother warned me that the guilt of a jewish mother never ends...)

There is only one God.

You make that correction, and I'll agree with it.
