A co-worker was asking me the same thing, and she wants to know it from the Christian point of view, since she is studying Law in a college...

How free Is free will? And if God sets a limit (or if not?) where do we draw the line?

thanks

Ask the people of Egypt that exercised their right to free will. What'd god do? he killed their first born cute babies. If that is what free will gets you, then I do not want god.

It is debatable as many of the scriptures would seem to indicate that we are predestined i.e god choses those that will believe, etc. Prophecy is another form of predestination, or at least relies on things that need to happen in order to fulfill them. This debate between "free will" and predestination is often rehashed throughout church history and in modern churches as well.

As an atheist, this is definitely a major theological problem as 1. eternal punishment/reward for an extremely short (non-existent when compared to eternity) time. and 2. Free will seems to be between good and evil, not really about god and not god, which is a rather harsh set up and obviously could have been different.

Look at the way the world is today. Do you think that people are limited in the things that they do? I believe the question should have been linked to our conscience instead. Yes, we DO have complete free will, but are we willing to throw all that is good and just away? Individually, this is a choice. Christian.

You won't read in the Bible the words "God gave them free will". We just understand that we have it because He doesn't FORCE us to do things His way so obviously we have our own decisions and choices to make, thus...our will and His will. Jesus prayed in the garden the night he was betrayed "Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me.....But not my will, Your will be done."

Free will has no limits. You can do whatever you want to do, you just can't expect to receive the Blessings of God while you are not in His. You can't expect His blessings on earth or expect to receive eternal life in Heaven. He has principles and guidelines, if you follow them...you're golden. If you decide not to....then you're on your own.

There is no limit to free will,
you are free to follow his commandments or NOT
you have always had the choice,

and if you Sin , or Don't follow those commandments,
your still accepted by God and forgiven,

Catholics, believe in original sin, which means that your already a sinner before you even commit a sin,

and already forgiven,

He is Omnipotent,Omnipresent, Omniscience

He already knows,

And that is the same in every faith

God is sovereign. Man's sovereignty is limited by God's.

He has given us free will, however, wants us to choose his way. He wants us to want to love him. He doesn't make us love him or worship Him - that is our choice. We must live a life according to what Jesus taught.
