My cat 'Misty' was diagnosed with Anemia today.
I took him to an emergency Vets last week because his back legs went all wobberly, he fell over and started panting. The vet kept him in over night and said that he was in a critical condition and it looked like he wouldnt make it through the night.... well he did! they kept him in for a few more days then he was allowed home. They were treating him for parasites and he was responding to the tablets. They then took blood tests and the results come through today and it showed he hasn't got Parasites but he has Anemia. The results show he is recovering and that it was caused by Fleas.
He seems really down and is wanting to sleep all the time, WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP HIM? WILL HE SURVIVE??? SHOULD I PLAY WITH HIM? WHAT FOOD SHOULD I GIVE HIM?????? HELP!

I'm very happy that yoor cat made it. Let him rest as this was both stressful and tiring for him. AQnemia will zapp out the energy. When he is ready to play, he will
Feed him as often as he wants to eat. Maybe a piece of chicken for a treat. Canned foods w/o gravy are best as cats are carnivores and protein is what they need. Best of luck

I'm sorry you're getting some really nasty answers. It just appalls me that people can be so insensitive! Anyway, I'm going to try to answer your questions seriously. Anemia can be a condition by itself or it can be a symptom that's caused by another condition. The course of treatment will depend on what's causing the anemia and I'm afraid only a doctor and tests can determine that. Anemia can be treated with iron supplements and it can get better and even completely resolve, but of course, the outcome depends on what other condition might be causing the anemia. Sometimes it's something really simple and easy to treat, and sometimes it can be a more serious condition. I wish I could give you a more definite prognosis, but you'll just have to wait to see what the vet says. As for the cost of your kitty's care, I think you might have some options. Try to talk to the vet and see if a payment plan can be worked out so that you can make smaller payments over a period of time until the debt is paid off. Sometimes (although not always) vets will be willing to work with you. You can also do an internet search for "veterinary financial assistance." I did this once and found a lot of web sites of organizations that will help pay for the cost of veterinary care. Also, there's a company called Care Credit (your vet's office should know about this) that will pay the bill for you, and then you'll be responsible for paying monthly payments to Care Credit to pay them back. I really hope that your kitty's problem turns out to be a simple one that's easy to fix. Just try to think positive.

Right now I would let him rest, he needs his sleep. You need to supplement his diet with things that will help build his blood back up. You can cook beef liver and chop it up for him, it's high in iron and will help. Kelp will also help, but you want organic and it can be purchased in powdered form and mixed with his food. Don't go overboard, just add a half teaspoon a couple times a week in his food. Also adding a small amount of vitamin C to his diet will aid in the absorption of the iron during digestion. Just crush a vitamin C tab and add a small amount to the food.
I would also recommend a natural diet for him.
The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care by C J Puotinen had all the information you need to feed him healthier.

Why don't you ask your vet these questions?! We don't know the answers, we haven't seen the cat, we don't his individual case! Oh, and we're not vets.

Really, these are all questions to ask the vet! Pick up the phone! He's made it through the night when they thought he might not, so odds are now in his favour. What's most important in future though is to keep him regularly treated for fleas, using a VETERINARY product, so this never happens again.

Anemia is iron low blood which will make your cat tired.Your vet should have out him on an iron rich diet or iron supplements. If treated he will get better as long as there isn't any other underlying conditions such as leukemia.
