My personal interpretation is that metaphorically it is sex.
Thus Adam and Eve declared themselves Gods in the creation of a human through birth.
Indianspirit, they were told to go forth and multiply after the original sin occurred.

There are lots of other symbols in the scriptures, riding on a white horse (for understanding the truth), etc. I think you are very perceptive answerers, at least the ones I saw... This can go a bit further. Could it be sex autside of marriage? We do know that there is a sixth commandment, later given to Moses. But might not this have been God's policy in the time of Adam and Eve? It is interesting that the story of Adam and Eve has the same provenance as the others of the first five books of The Old Testament... Actually, many people know the full details. But they will not be given here. One must search for them, as well as a better authority than myself, or some other person who was not there and did not see and does not know first hand. How about the Angels? How about an Angel who was there?

Te forbidden fruit is disobedience to the Lord.
Nothing about SEX, or LUST.
They were innocent, they did not know about that!
But the fruit of Knowledge of Good and bad was the tool that God planted, and they wanted to be like him, eat it.
And the creation started, not by accident, but for ordination.

As God commanded the first couple to 'go forth and multiply' obviously sex wasn't a sin. He did though forbid touching the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and bad - something that the first couple blatantly did any way - Thus cursing the rest of human kind

The knowledge of "good and bad"
Why would it be sex? God commanded Adam & Eve to be fruitful and become many.

It was a symbol only !
Since God already had told Adam and Eve to be fruitful and fill the earth up with their children, the idea that this had anything to do with sex is strange, ridiculous, and erroneous teaching.
^^^^^^ DRC
27And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. 28And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth.
^^^^^^^^^^
The fruit symbolized man's willing subjection to God's theocracy, willing obedience, willing acknowledgeable of God's wisdom and knowledge.
When they disobeyed, they disassociated themselves from God's rule of love, rule of theocracy.
Thus they lost his guidance and became their own makers of right and wrong. This was how important the eating of that single fruit was -- that was why it was named:
".9And the Lord God brought forth of the ground all manner of trees, fair to behold, and pleasant to eat of: the tree of life also in the midst of paradise: and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. "
^^^^^^^^^^^
Now, they had to rely on their own device and decide what was good and evil -- and, as we can see this has not turned out for the better for us. Indeed, the tree was well named.
