Jesus knew He was going to be betrayed and who was going to do it. He also told Peter that he was going to betray Jesus three times before the rooster crows. This was done so we could be forgiven of all ours sins. Jesus knew that He was going to die, and He was also human and didn't want to die. He also felt the pain when He was nailed to the cross. If God didn't give up his only Son for us, we would all still be living in sin or God would have destroyed the world again. It was to fulfill the prophesy.

Yes, Jesus knew everything He was going through and so did Judas. Judas knew all the time the hard task he had to accomplish. He had to do it, but nobody sees it this way. Judas was the only one who understood Jesus' mission and he was the only one condemned forever. What a sacrifice for His Master! Can you imagine you have to betray your Master, the one you love, because you were chosen to do so and because you have to fulfill the prophecy? No wonder he killed himself. Too much burden!
Peace!

It was part of the plot line. Fiction often uses such devices to make readers feel more sympathetic towards the "hero."

Did a historical Jesus exist?
http://www.nobeliefs.com/exist.htm
[Excerpt]
ALL CLAIMS OF JESUS DERIVE FROM HEARSAY ACCOUNTS
No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people. There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a man named Jesus. Devastating to historians, there occurs not a single contemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus got written well after the life of the alleged Jesus from either: unknown authors, people who had never met an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings. Although one can argue that many of these writings come from fraud or interpolations, I will use the information and dates to show that even if these sources did not come from interpolations, they could still not serve as reliable evidence for a historical Jesus, simply because all sources derive from hearsay accounts.
Hearsay means information derived from other people rather than on a witness' own knowledge.
Courts of law do not generally allow hearsay as testimony, and nor does honest modern scholarship. Hearsay provides no proof or good evidence, and therefore, we should dismiss it.

Remember at the Last Supper when Judas dipped the bread - JESUS told him, "Whatever you are about to do, do it quickly".
So yes, JESUS knew he would be betrayed.
There are many reasons for the why - I think not the least insignificant is "JESUS is our high priest, one who understands and can sympathize with us" - GOD needed to know what it was like to be human; to experience humanity, so HE could help us better in our times of trials.
The betrayal of a close friend, someone you have loved and trusted - is one of the most devastating things you may ever experience - I know when my college room-mate started sleeping with my fiance behind my back - so now I also know - JESUS has experienced betrayal; HE knows what this feels like; HE can help me.

Friend,
Is HE the ONLY ONE THAT WAS BETRAYED ?
To betray the persons who have reposed faith in the people, was or could be seen every where even now.It is human nature(?).
Ignorant people who value temporary things ., money , materials , position , status etc are just carried away in the stream and do this BETRAYAL against their conscience.

No, be was not betrayed. It is the tell-tale of the shakespeare of the Bible - the one who wrote Bible - which do not have any reliable history. Jesus was not born and there was no such an event in the history of the world. What remains, there was one carpenter's son, who was called and he helped somebody in need, who praised about his name from time and again and created stories derived from his happiness. He was, in fact, not Jesus, whom you asked about. Do not believe in scandals or books of stories. Believe in what you can see and your own experiments, which would only help you to be successful in life.

Submission of Our will to Almighty's Declaration cannot be considered by us as a " Betrayal - though it could be Painful ."
Every Now and then , Near-Future Events were Declared to Jesus , as Required Basis . Regarding his life Event , Few Days before - He was Intimated so as to Maintain his Balance of Consciousness .
Narration of Events certify this ....

yes He did know it before hand, read Mark 14:10 aand read trough the rest of the Chapter.
as to why ? Greed was one mentioned as Judas was mentioned as to having charge over the money and that he received money for his betrayal.
One 'theory' was to force Jesus hand against the Romans, it was the Theory that if Jesus felt the foot of a Roman soldier on his throat, that Jesus would destroy the Romans, they could not understand that Jesus was not there to destroy the Romans but to grant Salvation for all People, Romans included.
