BusyBee,
All Christians are/were called Saints in the Bible. Thus, one does not have to wait to be elected a "Saint" as the Catholic Church decrees. My favorite Saints are the two who spent the time to share the Gospel of CHRIST with my wife and I twenty years ago. We still spend time with them weekly. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds
EDIT:
Theophilus,
What a wonderful answer! Thank you for that bit of wisdom.

I am a Muslim but most of my friends are Catholics.
I think I find St. Francis de Assissi interesting especially when my friends bring their pets to the Church to be blessed by the priest during his feast day.
I am a vegetarian and an animal right activist...

I'm not Catholic, I'm Baptist, but I have to say I've always admired St. Nicholas. I know, it's Santa Claus, but the real Saint was truly a dedicated man.

There are many who have a 'special attribute' -- patron-saint kind of thing --
Ste-Therese a model of innocence, John Brebeuf of fortitude, etc. --
St. Anthony was mentioned -- in some circles known as helpful to find lost articles;
I like Francis of Assisi -- both as model of Poverty & as friend of animals [in fact -- named Patron Saint of the Environment, I think]. I admit, some of this old-fashioned and if goes too far borders on superstitious --
still, usually just pious old customs.
& to mention:
- re Joan of Arc-- I call her patron of 'the misunderstood'! -- what incredible faith, to be constant despite accusations
- to cutemom -- I think you mean Dominic Savio. (a pupil of John Bosco)
- St. Rita (& Lydwina) -- examples of patience & longsuffering
- to Eds -- I know what you mean, Saint can be a generic thing, like 'Christian', but something specific in RCC -- officially recognized as models & worthy of veneration
(Incidentally in many religions as well -- in India e.g -- 'holy men' etc.)
And finally -- John Paul II -- altho I think this is being unnecessarily 'fast-tracked' -- definitely meets criteria, especially so since 'ordinary guy' from rural background, who evolved into being a Christian example in Modern Times, where things so screwy it seems & we especially need good role-models.

I have one and she is the sweetest saint I know. Everytime you get around her its like you have entered in the presence of Christ. My saint has nothing to do with Catholics. She is not famous in anyway other than people know she prays and reads her bible daily. Her name is Ada. Thank God for her.

I am not Catholic, but there was someone who would tell you very quickly he was no saint, but he rates at the top of the list to me. That is Saul of Tarsus who was later known as Paul.

No, I'm not really big on the saints. Goes with the territory; I'm not Catholic.
Although...Joan of Arc was pretty cool.
