If the hamster's body is rigid, than it has passed on. However, if it's unmoving but still limp, it has gone into hibernation (which is actually a very bad thing for a pet hamster to do). If it's hibernating, gently wrap it in a towel that's been warmed in the dryer, and place it on top of a heat pack. It takes them a while to wake from hibernation, so let it come to slowly to avoid shocking its system. You can help the process a bit but gently rubbing the hamster's back to encourage blood circulation.

In very very rare cases, if there is a massive drop in temperature a hamster will go into hibernation, where the heart rate drops and theygo into a coma like state.

This is deadly, and in no means be taken lightly. Hamsters should never go into hibernation, and if they do the likely hood is they will eventually die.

If you think your hamster is dead but you are not sure place him somewhere very warm, and rub him to keep the blood circulation and heart pumping, look out for twitching whiskers and a very faint heartbeat.

If your hamster is a real gonner his body will go cold and hard.

Some of the previous answers are a bit blunt - I think I understand what you're asking here.

Hamsters can appear pretty dead if they slip in to hibernation (cold temperature). Pulse can be weak and their body temp low.

Slowly warm the hamster. If you use a hot water bottle, make sure it is well wrapped in towels or something to ensure hammie does not get burnt. Signs of life will appear and your hamster will start to stir, like he's really sleepy.

If you try to bend hammies legs a little or if you go to pick him up and he is absolutely rigid then he has passed on.

All mine have died with their eyes open - which made it pretty visually obvious they were gone.

If hammie has got cold, try what I suggested - and the very best of luck to you!

If you look at it CLOSLY and see it's not breathing at all. However if it gets to 15 degrees F in the room that it's in then it could just be hibernating. When it hibernates it apears dead, it's body will be rigid, it's temperture will drop, and it's breathing will slow down. If a hamster does go in to hibernation you can wake it up by turning up the heat and gently warming it up with your hands. If it's warm though in the room it's in and it looks dead and like it's not breathing it probably is. :(

The body gets very stiff and he will not move. If you can still see the chest rising and falling with breath, he's not dead.

If you suspect death, he's probably not too healthy right now and may die within a few days without diagnosis and treatment.

well if it isn't alive then that is a good indication. has it stopped breathing? has it's heart stopped beating?? does it just lay there looking stiff? has it quit eating? does it just spin half way in its wheel and when it gets to the top, falls straight to the bottom? if the answer to these questions is yes then chances are your hamster is dead

Why do you think your hamster might be dead??

If you can't see it breathing anymore,
if you poke it, it doesn't move
and if you touch it and it's really cold or colder than usual.

If you wrote this question because you think your hamster might be dying, I hope that he isn't dead and that you have enjoyed having him.

if your hamster is running around, eating, dancing and having the occasional cigarette then it's not dead, if it is looking more like a maggot infested pile of skin and bones i would definately consider it dead, seriously are you taking the piss

Normally when it's skin starts to come off the bones you know it's dead.
