hey,
I got a bet goin with a friend of mine about what color Beret the Airborne wears.
I say they wear black ones with the blue flash and unit crest and he says they wear maroon ones with unit flash and unit crest.

I've searched through a bunch of pic's in the internet and there are 101st Airborne units with black berets and then I see 82nd Airborne units with maroon berets...

Can anyone help?!

the 82nd wear's the maroon beret and the 101st wear the black. But you can also be in a unit that is airborne status and still wear a maroon beret. If your not in a airborne unit then you dont wear the maroon beret. But there is an exception right now with a unit in the 82nd that is wearing the maroon beret right now but they are not on jump status but they fall under the 82nd. Some of the people in this unit are not jump qualified but some are.

It's maroon.
I was in an airborne unit... we all wore maroon berets. The regular non-airborne wear black.
Certain units will require uniformity for everyone in the unit... which means everyone has to wear the same color beret regardless if they're airborne or not.
I never went to airborne school but I got to wear the cool beret and the airborne decal on my shoulder.

Berets Debut in U.S. Military

The first use of the modern beret in the U.S. military was in 1943, when a battalion of the 509th Parachute Infantry was given maroon berets by their British counterparts for their service in the war.

In 1951, the Marine Corps experimented with green and blue berets, but dismissed them because they looked too “foreign” and “feminine.”

The first widespread use of the headgear by U.S. forces came shortly after, when a new Army organization that was specially trained for insurgency and counterguerrilla warfare began wearing a green variety in 1953. It took another eight years for the Army’s Special Forces — the “Green Berets” — to win presidential approval from John F. Kennedy to make their headgear official.

In the 1970s, Army policy allowed local commanders to encourage morale-enhancing uniform distinctions, and the use of berets boomed. Armor personnel at Fort Knox, Ky., wore the traditional British black beret, while U.S. armored cavalry regiments in Germany wore the black beret with a red and white oval.

Troops of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., started wearing the maroon beret in 1973, while at Fort Campbell, Ky., the trend exploded, with post personnel wearing red, military police donning light green, and the 101st Airborne Division taking light blue as their color. In Alaska, the 172nd Infantry Brigade began using an olive green beret.

In 1975, the Airborne Rangers got approval from the Army Chief of Staff to use the black beret as their official headgear.

Over the next few years, the whole thing got out of hand, and in 1979 senior Army officials put on the brakes, Bradford said. The leadership allowed the Rangers to keep their black berets and in 1980, agreed to allow airborne troops to continue wearing the maroon version. But all others varieties were declared off-limits.

Technically the 101st Airborne isn't an airborne unit. It was in it's beginnings, but has since become an Air Assult unit, hence the black berets. the 82nd Airborne is an airborne division and wears the maroon beret.

you lose its maroon! the only units that changed were the airborne rangers that used to wear black berets until the u.s. army mandated black berets for regular soldiers now they wear tan berets. your confusion came from the 101st not being an airbone unit they are air assault troopers so they wear black berets .air assualt is heliborne so sorry you gotta pay up whatever the bet was.

Army Regulation 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Uniform, requires maroon on both the 101st and 82nd airborne. All airborne soldiers wear the maroon beret, except that airborne elements of the 75th (Ranger) Infantry wear the Ranger Tan Beret.
