They're in trouble. Not too long from now, they will exist in NE Canada, basically. The walrus, by the 1000's are now having to try to exist in Alaska 'cus their normal habitat lacks ice. Read it in Yahoo news, Science.

The numbers aren't as important as the fact they are being forced to move from an environment they have lived in since they evolved. They are but one of many species experiencing this. I personally think the polar bears could adapt to a different environment and survive just by moving south. Whether they will overcome the thousands of years of genetically programed behavior they must abandon in order to survive somewhere else is the real question. The lessons learned from other species like the salmon and the sea turtles isn't encouraging at all. Other species, just as important to the ecology are facing the same challenge with much less likelihood of success. When an entire species has to pull up stakes and move to a totally dissimilar area the odds are against them. Take a look at this clip from today's news.

Yes, polar bear population is about 20,000 and growing. The Bush still wants to list them on the Endangered Species List, which is not needed according to an article in Environmental News.

The current melting of Arctic Sea ice is not unprecedented. The Northwest Passage was open twice before in 1905 and 1944. About 60 ships made the trip during those two time periods. No ships have made the trip during the current melt. The current melt is due to regional, dynamic forcings (wind and ocean currents). Expect more ice in the Arctic next year.

The plight of the polar bears is a real ‘poster child’ for the Global Warming Alarmists. Everybody loves polar bears, so if the alarmists inform the public that they’re becoming extinct, then people will take Global Warming seriously.
Of course, it’s not actually true.
Here’s what a scientists who has spent a lifetime studying them has to say on the subject…
“Of the 13 populations of polar bears in Canada , 11 are stable or increasing in number. They are not going extinct, or even appear to be affected at present… it is just silly to predict the demise of polar bears in 25 years based on media-assisted hysteria.”
(See… http://meteo.lcd.lu/globalwarming/Taylor/last_stand_of_our_wild_polar_bears.html )
So, based on what actual scientists say, and not on the hype (and lies?) of the alarmists, I’d say you’re quite correct. They’ll be fine.
As ever with global warming - don't believe the hype.

I suppose if they are related to Brown Bears and if the pattern of gradual warming continues then they will have to adapt to a new changing Habitat, and Yowsie ain't hairy at all he just likes bears like me.

Polar bears were actually evolved from a relative of the brown bear, they are able to adapt and I think even though they are in a tough position at the moment almost starving, they will figure out a way, find another source of food other than seals, they will survive, just as long as humans stay out of their way and let them figure it out themselves, no being the heroes, just let them figure it out. I saw a doco the other day on it and they are really really struggling but they;ve seen polar bears looking at other sources of food except the only problem is its fast food lol and polar bears because of their coats get hot really easily so they cant run too much. This is how they have to evolve their coat is going to have to become less heavy so that they can run after more agile land mammals

What a bunch of stupid answers (sorry), jello's 5000 statistic is from a right wing propaganda group:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_bears#Conservation_status
There is evidence that polar bear population have decreased in number since the 80's.
The coat of polar bear took thousands of years to evolve, it won't adapt in a couple years.

Yea, and in the 1950's the population of polar bears was just 5,000. I guess this warming is even good for them.
