those who began Spiritualism back in the mid 1800s were Christian
they just experienced spirit and realised it did contradict what they were being told
so they broke away from Christianity but not from God
spirit speak of God , they teach about the next life
there are of course Christian Spiritualists who still believe in the bible but I believe they interprate the gifts of spirit as mentioned in Corinthians to include mediumship
just for the record
Spiritualist mediums do not practice divination unless they do so personally
Spiritualism is solely about spirit communication

No, not so contradictory really. Both spiritualists and believers in God rely on the assumption that the spirits/Gods/call them what you will - actually exist. It can be a highly profitable industry and is enormously popular. The Bible is the sales manual for one of the leading brands - unsurpisingly, it recommends that you don't try any others. Spiritualists are less well organised and dont have such a strong brand or identity. It would destroy the credibility of their own product if they suggested that the God brand was in any way false.

I certainly don't believe everyone who claims they're mediums are, they'd have to tell me some compelling stuff for me to believe. Personally, although that reading sounded good, it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to guess something right. If he saw the man was overweight, appeared to have had a rough life, and didn't look healthy, then saying "chest pains" would be a safe bet to say. However, yes, I do believe that there are actual mediums out there. I have spoken to a couple and have been told things that not even my husband or kids knew. When one told me my father would always say, "your bodies will never be found", my heart dropped. It's something that you just don't come up with. He described the room exactly where my mom died, even described what went on after she was found. I wasn't there, however, I'd called and when they were taking her the phone, she was found dead, but, when I told my siblings what he'd told me, they were floored, as it was exactly how things happened. I contacted another spirit messenger when I was being haunted (no, tormented) by my father, at the end of my rope and desperate for help. When she was communicating, she'd described the bangs, all the lights blowing, exploding, etc, the clocks, the pops, etc, when I hadn't even said a thing about being haunted, I'd just called and told her my name, and she just started talking, again, I was floored! I have not a shred of doubt that some are genuine, but I don't believe everyone who claims it is.

Spiritualism attempts to tap into a spiritual world that doesn't conform to the Judeo-Christian understanding of the spirit world. From the Christian perspective, the strange phenomena associated with spiritualism can be explained either through the work of deceiving spirits, who may mimic deceased loved ones, etc., or through clever but non-supernatural tricks aimed at making money from gullible customers. Either way, something bad is going down, and what better way to make the poison pill easier to swallow than to speak of God as a way to sugarcoat it. Even politicians do that. Do not forget that even the Bible calls Satan an angel of light, the god of this world, blinding unbelievers from the truth. If someone calls on God, it helps to know which god they are calling on. The Christian God can only be accessed in the name of Jesus, and only in a manner consistent with the book He gave us, the Bible. Generally, a spiritualist will not approach God in the name of Jesus. I think I can understand why.

As a Spiritualist I very much believe in a God power, but not in the way that Christians may view God.
Spiritualist are free to believe in their own interpretation of who and what God is.
We pray to a higher source, we know that our spirit continues after so called physical death, and we very much believe in a Great Spirit that connects us all. As we pray we know that our thoughts have an energy of it's own, and spreading positive thoughts is allowing that energy to go throughout the ether's touching whoever needs it.
Some parts of the Bible are beautiful and spiritual, other parts are full of ignorance. I believe Man wrote the Bible, not God, though Spirit may have inspired the more philosophical writings.

What you have to ask yourself is why would there be a warning in the bible to keep away from contacting spirits etc? If there's a warning there then there must be a good reason wouldn't you say? (assuming you believe the bible is from God)

The Bible also says that Satan masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14) and many people follow him thinking they are following the Holy Spirit. Spiritualists are deceived, they think they are following Jesus by singing hymns and praying, but they have been led down the wrong path. I'm sure most of them think they are doing nothing wrong, in fact I know they think they are ok because one of my closest friends used be heavily into spiritualism. When she became a Christian though, she realised very quickly that it was wrong and has never gone back to her Spiritualists church.

The Bible is correct...the spiritualists are wrong.
Their practice goes against what the Bible teaches.
It was probably 'moi' that cited the scriptures.

have you considered the possibility that the text may carry a deeper message, for those who can see it, that this is MEANT against NEGATIVE applications, or in such a way that it gets between the person and God.
and that its written in a way that those who cannot discern between holy application of such abilitys, and applications that would cause problems or get between the person and God, it simply appears as the text generally rules against it.
of course, the problem with this is that it appears, to those who are in a role of authority, despite not having the ability to discern the difference, that the people who say there is a difference, is simply making excuses to do things as they wish.
theres a difference. but its tricky in a way.
kinda like how that telling a kid not to play with fire or fireworks is ok, but it brings with it the implication that, with proper education of how to use fire or explosives or whatnot, that it is ok to utilize those things in a productive safe manner.
>>"that doesn't conform to the Judeo-Christian understanding of the spirit world."<<
please do not use that term. the Jewish/Kabbalistic(real kabbalah, not the pop nonsense) are not the same as christian ones.
in Judaism and Jewish Mysticism theres no concept of a devil such as in christianity. and ... well, the whole spiritual world is a pretty substantial difference from christianity's view. ... but not entirely .... its confusing to try to explain.

An interesting query! I too have wondered about this, maybe it is because they were frightened of what they might find?
Mediums, all Mediums are fakes, they can not make contact with the other side for there is not other side, if they can tap into anything it would be built up energy, I mean the Earth is just one big Magnet, this would create alot of energy, it could be interpreted as poltergeist, that is it. The truth is the church knows there id no afterlife, just thier interpretation of Heaven, if Mediums could talk to the people who are supposed to be in heaven, then how could they be in heaven, they can't, that would mean heaven is the spirtiual unseen world on EARTH, that is not the Christian Idea of heaven, thus it is forbidden. Like alot of things in Christianity!!!!
