Ok so Ive been a victim in the past and dont want to be again. I am looking into installing a security system. So I have three children under the age of 5, and a husband that works nights sometimes. I constantly have visions of someone breaking in and killing my family members, I am paranoid to the maximum! So please, how do I defend my family? I already know to call 911 if I have a phone available, gather my family and try to escape or hide. But my idea is to grab my steel pole and swing as hard as I possibly can aiming at the head or stomach, I dont want to take any chances- I want to knock the person out! I dont have pepper spray, but I figure Lysol spray might work too. I have no idea what I would do if they had a gun on us. Please help ease my mind :) I dont feel safe. Thanks.

The reason why I dont want to get a gun is I fear I may shoot one of my children or my husband if I am half awake.

There are all sorts of things you can use. But I agree that given your state of mind (which is very real and natural by the way), a security system and a dog (if you can) are good ideas. I have a beautiful friendly Rottweiller and nobody but nobody comes here at night without me (and them) knowing about it!
She would give you enormous peace of mind. However ...
If you do get in that situation, stealth, surety, speed and surprise are the keys. Surety - You must make sure this isn't your five year old! You should slip out of bed and down - just in case you're noticed. If possible hide where you can ambush.
If possible let the person leave the house with whatever they're stealing - nothing is worth your life. But if you believe they are a threat to saftey, make sure you do not alert them - if you snore, keep snoring while you prepare yourself.
Then fly spray in the face, a good quick steel bar but keep getting behind them in case they have a weapon. Take out the kneecaps (against the bend), groin and neck. And don't half do it! If you decide you have to defend yourself, you have to do it seriously.
EDIT: your second two swipes should be at the back of their hands so they can't hold a weapon. Forgot that bit.

The extra funding and recourse's needed to combat the Iranian THREAT is NOT about killing innocent women and children , Its Clearly about the National security of EVERY free nation on the planet , we AND our global allies chose to be the global peace keepers , and although some of the national policies , are somewhat vague from time to time , and the end result sometimes is looked upon with skepticism , the general intent has always been CLEAR , Safety for the planet , the US would NOT have a problem with anyone producing nuclear devices and power plants , If there thinking was not hell bent on killing Christians and Jews, and generally ALL free thinking people , Iran has allot of good people in it ,, they love there children as we do , there radical leadership is where the real THREAT danger lies, PURGE those individuals ,and bring more stability to that region of the world ,

You need to talk to your doctor. My guess is that you are exhausted. The chance of this happening is very remote. However a good security system is a good idea in any neighborhood. Have you considered getting a dog? Not a guard dog, but just a mutt from the pound will bark at an intruder. Don't get a gun, you have small children in the house and you are paranoid, not a good combination. Get some sleep, you sound like you are running on empty.

You should take a self defense class, you can usually find free classes offered at the YMCA. You would know to aim for the balls or the eyes to effectively take a guy out. I hit my brother in the stomach as hard as I can all the time and it doesn't even faze him. Educate yourself and your kids, it is good family time activity too. I have thought about this scenario before, it might also help to psych an intruder out by calling out a name, or a string of names like Craig, John, Bob, Dave as if there are several adults in your home that you can call out for.

Well first what you need to do is MAKE SURE it is someone breaking into your home, i would hate for your husband to come home and surprise you or something that you hit him really hard with a metal pole. My suggestion would be the YMCA they self defense classes, and if you really want to be able to fight off an intruder, i would HIGHLY suggest jujitsu , you can dodge the intruder and basically make him hurt himself with hardly any effort at all. It takes time, but it is well worth it. With Jujitsu you can break bones and make people wish they had never messed with you.
EDIT: here is a little about it

my boyfriend knows this and he can block every hit I go for at him

Have you thought of installing an alarm system in your house. If you had a gun your kids might get access to it, or you might get scared if you hear a noise and accidently kill somebody you know. LOL. Anyways you are not rambo but the idiot who breaks in your home will probally be a weakling and a steal pole or pepper spray, or Lysol will probally work.

Well short of sleeping in a panic room with your kids when your husand is away you could use pepper spray and take self defence classes to learn how to defend yourself and your children if the time ever arises. You could also get yourself an outdoor dog, which while add some sense of security and ease your mind a little.

Cheap and easy solution create a "Panic Room", have the door frame of your closet beefed up with steel rods and install a deadbolt.
Install a phone in there and if someone breaks in get the kids in there and call 911 and wait it out.

I think you need to get some councilling. What you are describing is beyond a healthy fear for your safety and borders on obsession. Along with therapy, get that alarm system. Police will generally advise against getting in a physical confrontation with an intruder, because you never know if he/she will be armed or not.
