I'm a peaceful Christian who believes that all religions should be tolerant. There doesn't seem to be room for peace when a zealot can always interpret their religious text as pro-violence. What are your thoughts?

Religion isn't totally, I think it is economic and political interests cynically invoking religion to acquire moral support to wage wars.

The problem is not so much the religion, but the tendency of the religious to take things they are told as articles of faith instead of challenging them. Especially when they are presented with moral causes and asked to accept them as Christian. *edit* or Muslim or anything else.

Disagree. Religion is a large contributing factor, as it is still the primary method of population control, especially during times of hardship. Religion is used to get people motivated for a war or conflict, as well.
Religion isn't the only malady Humanity suffers from, though. Most of our sufferance comes from the fact that we are human, and our biological design. Emotions are a major factor, and so long as people can use these emotions to motivate us for war, we'll continue doing as such. So no, there are border disputes, immigration problems, the desire to be the strongest, the desire to be the wealthiest, politics, racism, sexism, classism, and a host of other human problems which will keep "war" a major theme in Mankind's history.

There have always been zealots in most religions and the moderates provide human shelter for them, if anyone tries to tackle the zealots the moderates take offence and prevent any action that might usefully contain the zealots.

Religion and a million other more reasons why everybody won't simply "get along". Keep peace inside yourself, that's a good start.

God Bless.

It is not Religion keeping us from world peace. It is the rejection of God's infinite mercy that is doing it. Jesus said : "Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to my mercy" Here is your answer.

i semi agree.
it seems on the surface that religion is what starts fights etc but i really think that it's people's need to follow a leader, i don't mean God or anything, i mean there is often just one radical who only gains power because people want to follow someone and have a cause to follow. there is a saying, something like if it wasn't for followers you'd only have a few angry people in a room.

i don't agree,mostly...the core message of most major religions is to maintain peace in the society, and to live tolerantly and harmoniously amongst the people of a nation..what's going on in the world today, is mainly due to ignorance, misinterpretations, lack of understanding and narrow-mindedness..
