It is hard to compare drivers from the good old days when the point system has changed so much.... in all fairness, under the same system Petty and Sr. raced under, Gordon would have his 6th Championship this year.
As far as wins go, Gordon will most certainly make it to 3rd all time possibly as early as next season with a chance at making #2 by time his career is over.
There is certainly an argument that Gordon is not THE best driver ever, but he would certainly rank as ONE of the best ever. Petty, Earnhardt Sr., and Gordon are definitely in a class of their own that very few other drivers can qualify to be in.

People. At first glance Jeff Gordon looks like a stiff Premadona. That's exactly what I thought as well. I felt that way for years until he started to loosen up and relax. He is not a good ole boy because of his persona, but all in all he is a great driver and I love it when he smokes Johnson.
On the other hand Dale Jr is a person who relates with the working man. He shows it in his actions and his talk.Lets face it, who would you rather talk to or hang out with? That question is a no brainer. 2 different personalities, opinions, thats what its all about.
Go SMOKE!!!!!!!

Alot of people dislike Gordon because he wins. People got tired of seeing him win all the time back in the late 90's so it just kept snowballing from there.
I think it's between Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart as to who is the best all around driver in NASCAR. However with this season going the way it has so far, I would give the nod to Jeff Gordon. The move he made in the race sunday at Talladega was simply great. Say what you want about restrictor plate racing, but it does take alot of talent knowing where to place yourself and when to make your move. Jeff Gordon timed it perfectly and got the win. Congrats to him.

He is the best driver currently.
To say best driver ever is a discredit to him as he iis still an active driver.
The plan used to sit back and ease through the field was a very good one and to be patient showed the maturity of the team.
Gordon is the best on the circut today.
I do not particularly like Gordon(due to something that I witnessed about 10 years ago at an autograph session) but I totally respect his ability as a driver. If he was driving for any other team in NASCAR I would be the biggest Gordon fan around.

gordon showed all of them yesterday why he is the best that there is. i like jr. personally, but he will never compile the wins that Gordon has. I think that next year you will see a much better driver, with a lot of wins, but it is a little to late in his career. People don't like Gordon because he is a class act, in a sport where class does not mean anything to a lot of the fan base. Petty or Sr. would have never won as many races as Gordon has, if they had to win them today. He is the best.

LMBO!! @ Gordon detractors who constantly Whine about Gordon. Their lame attempt to discredit his wins by saying Gordon cheats. Perhaps those ppl need to get a grasp on reality and realize that Gordon has more than proved he's amongst the best race car drivers to ever race in NASCAR's series.
Furthermore, it goes to show the real fans of NASCAR, that the belittling/degrading/insulting, that certain ppl/fans do to certain drivers proves they're less than true fans. Perhaps they should find another sports to watch and take their attitudes with them.

No doubt, Jeff Gordon is a good driver. He also exceptionally lucky. He is by no means the greatest driver ever, he may be someday when he grows up but he is far, far away now.

I agree that Gordon is one of the best drivers ever in the sport, but I don't like him because he is arrogant as heck. He even criticized Tony Stewart for helping him win. He moved up the track to block Stewart and Kahne, who were gaining on JJ toward the lead, when Surprise!--Tony bumped him into the lead for the win. How about that?
