Dear Mooney, this question was revealed to the people of Muhammad during a time when the Jewish and Christian tribes around them were persecuting them. They were not to be taken as ALLIES because of their hostile status, NOT because of their religion. Some companions of the Prophet fled to a CHRISTIAN king in Abyssinia knowing he was righteous and he gave them safe refuge and passage.

Most all translations are good but not perfect.
One example fron the English Translation of the Quran----- "do not take the Jews and Christians as your friends (auliya)".
The arabic word AULIYA is used to mean protector or absolute confidential guardian of ones property and family if you died.
The translation "friend" doesnt translate well and in fact has created confusion.
There is no prohibition for taking the Christians and Jews for friends.
In Islam Muslim men can MARRY amongst the Christians and Jews so obviously marriage is stronger than friendship.
This verse pertains to taking a "fast friend" and a fellow person of ones faith to be appointed as an auliya or guardian over ones estate, family etc so that Islamic laws are carried out for the funeral and inheritance etc.
Always going back to the original Arabic meaning is very important for English readers of the Quran.
Also, studying the context of why each verse came down will answer a mulititude of questions concerning the verses of war and self defense.

There are verses in the koran where Muhammed says Satan put words in his mouth. Maybe this is one example, since Muhammed also says to respect Jews and Christians. I have seen these verses, by the way.
Now wait for the Muslims to call me ignorant of Islam.

As I am a Muslim, I will continue to follow all verses in the Quran.
You have translated those verses in wrong way and resulting the translation far from the truth.
Since that, you have started to open the anger of any sides.
Congratulations !!!

Yes, we will always, insha'Allah.
We will never deny a single word of holy Qura'n, ever.
What is said in holy Qura'n, is the ultimate truth.
Jews and Christians of present time are providing us proof about the truth, what is said in holy Qura,n, look at Afghanistan and Iraq, what kind of cruelties by Jews and Christians, are in progress over there.

Yes their religion teaches them to hate Christians and Jews. However it also teaches some other horrify things as well. Their profit Muhammad married a six year old girl and then had sex with her when she was nine. Their Muhammad also said that when they go to paradise they will have young virgins and also young boys. You can see what he means by young, he means little children.

Your quotation is not quite right. In 5.51 Allah spoke that muslims are not allowed to appoint christian and jew as their leader but as friends are allowed..The leader should be muslim too.We muslims will continue to follow the contents of Qur'an and practise it in our lives because Allah maintains its genuity until the end of this world (kiamat) We do not hate christians and jews as long as they do not treat us as their enemy.or they do not insult Islam and its followers..We should respect them if they respect us too.

I've seen an attempt to reconcile this verse by interpreting the word "friend" as "ally". Either way, it demonstrates the same kind of intolerance they are constantly complaining about.
Another interesting verse in the Qur'an says that Muslims may take up to 4 Christian or Jewish wives. Interesting double-standard.

Thou wilt find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe (to be) the Jews and the idolaters. And thou wilt find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe (to be) those who say: Lo! We are Christians. That is because there are among them priests and monks, and because they are not proud.
