Who was responsible for allowing such a backward religion as Christianity was and still is to contaminate the heart of the Roman Empire?
Europe, at the time, was the center of the world and the Middle East was a mere insignificant province of the Roman Empire inhabited by culturally inferior people; and it is a miracle that Christianity took roots in sacred Rome; and because of that foreign religion Europe took a dive into the Dark Ages for a 1000 years.
So much for Christianity.

It was desperation. The Emperor needed a unifying force to control a collapsing administration. It could have been any religion really. Could have been Buddhism but its too peaceful - Islam hadn't been invented, Jewdism would have been a good alternative but he chose Christianity.

It did not work - as history shows - not long after - plunged into the dark ages (or were they?)

Mind you - it could be argued that the Roman empire never died, it just became the Catholic church under the new Roman Emperor - the Pope

There was a Russian emperor who did the same and imported Greek Orthodox and made it Russian Orthodox.

So there we are - religion is more about power than anything else

It was that damn Constantine.

edit- As bad as Christianity is for society, the Roman Empire fell partly due to the fact that they were being lead poisoned. It was a lot of things, Christianity wasn't necessarily one of them.
