For many reasons but I'll give you a simple to the point answer.
1. It is not representing a scenery of landscape or an action type of picture.
2. It is not a portrait of any one.
3. It is a simple fruit tree with no complicated background setting to draw one's eye away from the subject.
4. A still life is a simple painting, drawing, sketch, etching of a very basic subject.
5. Not all still life pictures have to be the typical fruit bowl or piece of fruit.
6. Last but not least, it use of colors is easy on the eyes, not complicated or busy.

Good luck.

It is not an "important" painting in the history of art. She IS an influential and highly regarded painter in Australia. She died in 1963.

Hi! It looks like branches from Ficus (fig) tree and they do grow in Australia (see links). What I will say about her painting.. is how it makes me feel. She gave her subject integrity.. it speaks with honesty. It's wonderful. Thank you for introducing me to her!
