He ran away last night and I found him tonight. His back left paw is bothering him. He doesn't like to put pressure on it, yet he's still going up and down stairs and jumping onto things like normal which I know will make it worse, and I know it hurts him because he starts panting and he lays down. He ate his food when he came home and tried to drink out of the shower head but ended up not drinking. He layed in my room with me for a little while and then he went down to the dirty basement and is now laying in a corner, whimpering. He won't leave the corner & he isn't responding to me much. I'm guessing he's just tired or something? I want to take him to the vet asap but my mom insists on waiting a couple days to see what happens. I guess he sprained his foot but with the way he's acting, I'm hoping he makes it to morning. I'm really worried, though. It's reminding me of my guinea pig before she died. She sat in the corner of her cage, whimpered all night & died in the morning.
Ideas?

^ I didn't mean to put that twice. Sorry!
Thank you all for your input. It's 3am now and I keep going down to the basement to check on him [his name is Bob] and he seems to be okay for now. I just want to pick him up and bring him up here to my room but I don't want to hurt him more. If I had a car of my own I'd take him to the vet this second! I would wake my dad but he'd be pissed off since he has to be up for work in a couple hours.. and mom is at her house sleeping. It's just so frustrating, you know? I left a note for my dad telling him that Bob is in the basement and I think he needs a vet asap. Ahh I hope he's okay. =/ And I hope I can get to the vet in time.

Cat are usually very good at hiding their pain. It's a survival instinct so as not to let their enemies know they are vulnerable. If your cat is whimpering, then he might be in a lot of pain. Please take him to see a vet today. It might be something as simple as a sprain, but only a vet can tell you exactly what is wrong with him. The sooner he is seen by a vet, the sooner he can begin to feel better.

This similar thing happened to my cat once upon a time, it seems as though if this cat is a normal house pet and it was strayed away by another cat I suspect, not running away. This means it was probably treated like a wild stray cat when it went away from home, think of it as a little child who was lost and then came back, the cat would be terrified because it was obviously in a fight with some bigger stray cats and suffered very badly with the sprain. I wouldn't wait as this cat has been traumatised like my cat was and it came home with a gaping hole near its neck so we had to take it to the vet to be checked out immediately. This cat needs a doctor asap. ti has been tormented and needs a check up.

Cats don't whimper without a very good reason. He might have other injuries that you cannot see. They will often go somewhere to hide if they think they are dying. I don't mean to scare you unnecessarily, but you need to take him to a vet immediately and have him checked out! I realize it is not inexpensive, but if your Mom is like me, she will take care of him just like she would if it were you that were hurt and could not tell her exactly what was wrong. Pets can't talk, but they obviously can whimper. Take him to a vet!

get him to the vet now! sounds to me like he has possibly been hit by something, a bicycle or even a car, even just a mild bump from either of them could cause internal injuries. It is never good when they refuse to drink, whimper and pant

He could've been poisoned or hit by a car, who knows. The important thing is to get him to the vet as soon as you possibly can. See if there are any emergency veterinary clinics in your area. I know our vet offers an after-hours number in case of an emergency, so check around and get him in tonight if you can.

He must've injured himself. You should take him to the vet as soon as possible... The longer you wait, the longer your cat will have to suffer whatever injuries he's got.
