Christians, if you have a problem with your kids trick-or-treeting do you put up a chrismas tree every year?

If you do did you know that the tradition of putting up a chrismas tree was derived from a pagan tradition?

The Christmas tree was originally called the "boughs of Balder" in honor of Balder the heir to the throne of Odin. He was slain by the conniving schemes of Loki, and waits in hel (not a place of torment - just waiting). At Ragnarok, he will come out of hel and renew the nine-world tree. The evergreen boughs remind us of his life-renewing powers, and the renewal of the tree.

Yes, that's right. I'm a Christian, and we always went trick or treating on Halloween and we always had a Christmas tree. These customs, although pagan in origin, have become cultural now, very secular, and no longer have any connotation of evil for Christians. It's like the Hasidic Jews who wear the rolls of hair hanging down. I understand this was started to distance themselves from pagans who cut their hair short. Now it's just a tradition, but they act as if it was handed down from God Himself. I even heard one so-called "Christian" argue that we shouldn't have Easter because it wasn't mentioned in the Old Testament! Gee, we're supposed to be living under Grace now. They should get over it.

I probably shouldn't answer this 'cause I DO celebrate Halloween, but yup I knew about the tree and I know about the Easter eggs too!

I don't have a problem with the idea of celebrating Samhein or Ostera as seasonal festivals or as a day to remember those that have passed on.

So yeah I know and I got no problems with it.

Not christian. And I am reinforcing what Robin Runesinger said.

I also want to add mistle toe to the list.

They are traditions for amusement. we dont care if you take part in them and I am sure god dosent care either.

None of them involve religion. They are things we have taken with us from the past. and as time went on we gave them new meanings.

So the christians need to chill.

Jer 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
Jer 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
Jer 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. and do you know what you are calling on your kids on halloween

I already know that. I don't celebrate Halloween. Why do you wanna dress up like witches and draculas, something God hates? It isn't helping the spiritual growth. I could remember the dead but not celebrate it. My defense about celebrating christmas is, it is pagan yes so we stole it and make it a christian celebration instead. In our hearts we could really celebrate Jesus' birth. Our hearts our turned towards Jesus.

Yawn.

Did you know that jack-o-lanterns were to house the souls of the departed when they visited this level of existence, as a courtesy so they could be carried around and shown what the world was like now? They were carved out of turnips.

Only Christians were able to make something evil out of Halloween.

NightShade,
Please stop trying to justify the practice of trick-or-treating. Two wrongs don't make a right. It's great to see that your eyes are open though.

I celebrate neither Halloween, nor Christmas, or any other holiday for that very reason. Didn't Jesus say we must not dishonor God by our traditions? -Matthew 15:3

Yep, thats why we don't do it. Christmas is Mithras and Saturnalia made over. Saturnalia is actually found in the Bible:

Rev 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

They were celebrating THE DEATH OF GOD'S HOLY PROPHETS.
