Yes I think it's an excellent start but take your time and don't push yourself too hard.

hm..depends on the form.. if you can do 40 with good form, you are quite good. push-ups is a very good exercise and believe me that there are not much man who can do 10 with the right form. it will help you to build your biceps, triceps, shoulder, chest and back-rack muscle.. if you really want to burn out that muscles of yours..try this super-set..

first set...20 push-ups (good form)
2nd set...20 push-ups (good form)
3rd set...20 push-ups (good form)
last set...push-ups until failed...

after finishing this..i assure you that you will find your muscle.. as if they are burning..take 30 sec rest between each set. you will see that this method is much more beneficial then just doing 40 straight..

Excellent start, make sure you pay attention to your form, not just the number of reps. Try to add a couple more reps every week.

It's a bit much. Better to start with ten good ones (proper posture, nose touches the ground) than forty crappy ones.

ten to twenty properly done push ups sounds more like it .
