Does any one know why this is and is there any way to practice so I can close just one eye while the other stays open? The reason why it is a big deal is because my profession requires me to look through small holes like a monocular microscope but I can't see through the hole unless I close the other eye. Sure I can manually close the other eye but I need both my hands free. This has been screwing with me for over a year now. I am forced to wear an eye patch and it sucks. I need help!

Closing one eye whenever you look through a microscope will just make the muscles around your eye tired.... so trying to learn how to wink is probably not the most productive way to approach this.

Best way is probabably forget about winking and practice keeping both eyes open when looking through the microscope. Try to ignore the image you don't want...it takes a bunch of practice. I need to do it all the time when testing people's eyes and it took a while to get used to when I first started.

Your the scientist lol...If your asian in any way this might be the issue I have a friend whos eyelids are too stretched to wink and her face cant contort that way and this is natural for her, or if you have thin eye lids. I would say look into a mirrior and make funny faces at yourself..I know it sounds funny but it will stretch the skin. Wrinkle up your face and practice holding one eye open while closing the other one. It is all in the face muscles. Good Luck.

Strange. It was my impression that you were not supposed to close the other eye in using telescopes and microscopes because of the tension it causes in looking - you are supposed to look with both eyes and concentrate only on the image that you want.

The ability to wink (close one eye only) is an inherited trait, like the ability to curl your tongue. Either you can or you can't.

The only other solution besides the patch is to ask for a binocular instrument.
