It seems like at my work it is completely acceptable to come in late.
Today, two people called in sick and two people including a fellow manager came in late. The same manager has shown up more than 4 hours latei n hte past. The other person comes in late so much that it's joked about.
Why is this so acceptable? Why can't they show up on time and why doesn't the store manager do anything about it?

For me coming in punctually or coming in late doesn't matter. What is important to me is the effectiveness that the employee works. What is the use of coming in ahead of time if all he does in the office could not contribute to the goals of the company. Inversely, why should we hate people coming late if their output is submitted on time and so effective. However, if a person is coming late and he is not effective in his job, all companies should get rid of him.

unless policy and procedure for time and attendance is followed consistently and across the board for everyone, it is very difficult to enforce. as is the case in your store. you should ask your HR rep what the policy is for showing up late etc, is so you know what to do so no one can ever hold anything against you. then when you are a manager you can be one of the consistent ones who actually gives a *&^% and follow policy.

It's hard to be the responsible one when everyone around you is irresponsible. However, that's the way to succeed in life. It just feels unfair, but integrity means doing the right thing even when others don't.

Good question. I would shitcan their asses. They must be doing something good in order to stay around. Or whereever you work is just hard up for help and they don't think that they could do better than these joker you call coleeges (sp?).

Assume they are paid on commission. If you don't pay people for their TIME, you have no control over it. If you pay them for performance, than that's all you can talk to them about. Your colleagues perform, that's all you can ask for.
If they are poor performers, ask you manager what this is about and why it's being tolerated.

This is very lax management. I suspect that they are having problems finding help so they let these people slide.
