this is more a matter of opinion, perspective, and belief than anything, but i'll try to answer as best i can. please note, however, that every great warrior, tactician, strategist, mastermind, general, admiral, sailor, pilot, etc. was in a different circumstance at a different time with different resources, intelligence, etc. hence, it is almost impossible to indisputably state who the greatest hero of warfare is.
to list off a dozen or so of the expected answers: MacArthur, Nelson, Pershing, Yi Sun Shin, Patton, Rommel, Yammamoto, Alexander of Macedonia, Amenenhab, Djehuti (he lost, but he was wily), George Washington, Andrew Jackson, John Paul Jones, etc.
my answer is this; the greatest hero of any and every war is the fighting soldier, sailor, cook, pilot, ground crew, etc. that does his or her duty well without complaint, who never backs down and always looks out for his comrades, who protects the innocent, who embodies "espirit de corps". basically, the ordinary grunt. the common man. the soldier. the hero.

Alexander the Great as far as world history. The one who was the best at what he did as far as American history, I would have to say Gen. George S. Patton Jr. He was a real leader and warrior. I wish we had a few like him now.

it is hard to beat John mcCain. He suffered for 6 years in the Hanoi Hilton being punished for statements from Hanoi Jane and John Kerry. Then he had the backbone to stay till the last guy went home when he could have left before.
