I say the Marines will have to let you wear your hair to your waist. (Yes I'm talking about a man going in with long hair)

What about Freedom? The man (Religious) has rights.

Absolutely Yes...You can definitely keep your hair. There is a very nice hair salon at Paris Island where you will be able to get all of the top hair products. You can get directions from your DI/Gunnery Sergeant when you arrive...Good Luck!

nope. The military has standards. since it is an all volunteer military, you must decide for yourself which right takes precedence: religious Freedom, or the right to serve in the military.

From a strictly logistics standpoint, long hair is counterproductive.. helmets must fit properly, not to mention the lovely little critters that will inhabit the head while in the field.

The Marines are like any other workplace, they have dress codes.

You will not be allowed to keep your long hair. This would go for women as well as men...although women can keep it somwhat longer, but waist length would be an issue.

The reason behind this has little to do with religon, but with safety issues. Hair that long, even it is tied back and came loose, poses a serious safety risk around any machinary. Also, if the hair is tied back, it would be next to impossible to fit on a gas mask or safety goggles. This leaves the soldier at risk for serious injuries and, in the cases of engines, could cause serious equipment damage.

The military is supportive of individual religous beliefs in that is allows all soldiers to worship in their own way. If multiple daily prayers are part of that belief, the military will do it's best to accomodate. However, all soldiers and sailors must follow the policies for appearance...not only for safety but to increase the sense of unity in the group.

As many have clearly stated, one of your first pleasant experiences upon arrival at MCRD will be the hair cut. ALL OF IT.

After that it is cut again, once a week.

About your rights...when you volunteer to enlist, you are agreeing to abide by the regulations, set forth by HQUSMC, you have no rights unless the Marine Corps specifies them.

I am sorry, they won't allow you to keep your long hair just because of your religion. If your religion is that important to you, stay out of the Corps. They have enough to do without having to accommodate you.

Besides, long hair does not work well with gas masks, helmets and NVGs, it is unsanitary, and a safety hazard. It can get caught in equipment, catch on fire or even obstruct you view. All of these factors make you (and you hair) a danger to those around you.

Long hair looks best on the ladies.

Of course not. Every service has dress and appearance standards, the US Marines, most of all. A guy can GO INTO the Marines with long hair, but the first visit to the barber shop will cure that. After that, the new Marine will always be required to maintain his hair within regulations, no exceptions.

No. Everyone has that right, but the standard that allows the military to do this is that the law does not require the military to make unreasonable accomodations. Long hair would be an unreasonable accomodation. Same with facial hair and the like. Can't engage in hashish or peyote ceremonies for the same reason.

As usual you are wrong, if you are not willing to follow the military regulations then the US Marines do not have to allow you to enlist, there are a few grounds that you can get refused on.

Long hair = unhygienic in water short or battle wound scenario.

Long-hair, danger of being caught in moving parts
of machinery.

Long-hair could be used as a hand-hold by an enemy in close combat situation.

So your question fails to stand up as usual.

My beloved Marine Corps doesn't care if you are Jesus Christ. If you want to be a U.S. Marine, you will have your hair cut. I would love to see you argue your point with a USMC Drill Instructor. No one ever tried that line with me when I was getting recruits off the bus and onto the yellow footprints. We don't give a rats tail what your religion is. Our Navy Chaplains will be happy to help you understand that God loves Marines. Thats why we guard Heavens streets.

No.
They have those regulations set up for more than just appearance. They don't want you getting your hair caught in the bolt of a weapon or rotors of an aircraft. also, your gas mask would never form a complete seal on you, therefore making it useless.
