If the doctor says a tumor is benign, can it become malignant after the diagnosis?

Very few benign tumors convert to malignant, but it can happen. Ideally the benign tumor is completely removed. Usually if there is this possibility (for example, in the colon) scheduled surveillance testing is performed, like a colonoscopy every 3 years.
