Are you serious? Because there are 10 dogs for every available home. What do you suggest we do with all those extra dogs?

Im from BC and here none of our SPCA's put animals down, so the whole "overcrowding" excuse is pretty lame. they run off of donations with very little government funding and still run a clean productive shelter. if a dog has been there for a long time with no success finding a home they will sent him to another branch to see if he will find a home there. yes some times things get crowded, but never so much that it puts the animals in harms way. they are cared for and excerised by staff and volunteers on a regular basis. so really i guess i dont know why people kill shelter dogs in the states...cause they dont do it here

HUH?? They would find homes for the dogs if there were homes available.. Or if the people were coming in to pick up the dogs.. They can't keep taking in unwanted dogs, unwanted litters and everything else without having to kill some of them.
People don't train or socialize, and dump their pets.
People don't realize the work that comes with owning a dog, and they dump him
People have these ridiculous unwanted litters and they dump them..
People dump their old dog in favour of a new puppy..
It goes on and on and on.. The problem isn't with the shelter.. It's with stupid people who keep dumping their animals.. People who keep producing mutts, unwanted litters and everything else.. There aren't enough homes for the dogs in the shelters.. Yet look around at all the people on YA who think that it's a good idea to breed their ridiculous pet.. THEY are adding to the problem, they are the main reason there is a problem.
If the homes aren't there, the dogs need to be killed.. Remember that when you want to breed your pet..
In case people aren't aware.. We no longer need mutts, you can stop producing them now.. Market is fully saturated, it can handle no more mutt litters... Check your shelters.. You'll see them all sitting there..

They can't sell them because people don't want them! They can't even give them away! There are too many dogs and cats. This is why so many of us on here get frustrated with people wanting to breed who know nothing about it.There are so many dogs and cats in shelters.Don't you think they would be happy to be able to sell them if they could? Oh,but they do sell some. They sell them to laboratories, where they have terrible experiments done on them, and then they are killed and dissected to see if the experiment "worked."And ,it's legal in many states. That's where many of the cute puppies that people just have to breed end up - on the dissection table of a lab. What a waste and a shame.

Not all animal shelters euthanize dogs. There are a lot of No Kill rescue organizations who place dogs in foster homes until they find the right home for them. Other animal shelters don't really have a choice but to humanely euthanize dogs who dont get adopted. There are just way too many in this world, and not enough homes. And it is not the animal shelter's fault. The people to blame for the pet over population are back yard breeders, puppy mills and pet stores who sell puppies, and the owners who surrender their dogs. Most of the time the owners who surrender their dogs are usually people who have recieved a dog as a gift, people who didn't do research on the breed BEFORE bringing their dog home, and people who fail to get their dog spayed/neutered, and have an accidental litter.
We can help fight to reduce the pet over population by choosing to adopt an animal from an animal shelter or rescue organization. Also by educating the people around us about adopting from animal shelters vs. buying from back yard breeders and pet stores. Also educate them on the importance of spaying and neutering. Encouage people to do research on their breed of Interest BEFORE decided to bring the puppy home.

People don't want to travel the distance to the shelter
They see a cute petshop puppy/kitten and buy it.
Many people are under the impression you can't find a purebred dog at a shelter only mixed breeds and often they don't realise they sell puppies&kittens too.
They have to kill them to make room for other animals to attempt to be rehomed. Yeah there more animals that get killed, then ones that get sold. it really sad.

They are never sold. Tey are adopted. There is a difference. Why is it done? Because irresponsible owners get dogs from irresponsible breeders, then can't keep them, or don't want them after they grow up, so there are too many pets, and not enough homes. What else can be done with dogs no one wants? No one wants them because they can go to the nearest irrespopnsible breeder and get new puppies to dump into shelters when they aren't born housetrained and socialized.

I worked in an animal shelter for over 25 years, and yes animals are euthanized everyday,no one liked doing it,but because of irrisponsible pet owners, there is always going to be a need for euthanasia,The main goal for all animal shelters is to close down,if all animals we're spayed, and neutered there would be no need for euthanasia, because there would be no animal over population,it all comes down to responsible pet owners

Too many dogs and not enough space. Its sad because people don't want grown dogs, they want puppies. People's lifestyles change and they give up there dogs or people don't get there dog fixed and they add to the problem. Its really sad, I think if you get a pet you should get it fixed and keep it for life as part of the family.
Just my opinion.

There are more dogs and cats put to death in US shelters EVERY YEAR than there are people in New York City. Think about that- when you're done being shocked, you'll understand why we feel so strongly about spaying and neutering pets and not breeding for profit or for 'fun.' There is nothing fun about watching a healthy animal die because there isn't anyone who wants to care for it.
