The answer is 1200 dpi (usually).

I have designed several magazines and specialized in high-end full color print work.

Superb quality work is printed at 1200 dpi (dots per inch), using a 175 line screen (quality of the screens used on the photographs.

The photographs, digital camera or scanned image, should be 300 ppi (pixels per inch) as far as resolution goes.
