Hi. I brought a male kitten few months back. He was 5 months old and had just started to sense his surroundings. I often took him outdoors for walk and activity. Yesterday evening when my cat was walking in the grass i saw an eagle gliding above in the sky. It was quite a sight, and i was looking at it in joy. Suddenly that same eagle dived towards the ground, and i though that he is going to crash or is injured. Then within a split second, he picked up my cat and flew into the sky. I was horrified by the sight. My heart almost failed and i screamed. But it was too late and i couldn't do anything. I didn't even get enough time to react. I'm still very worried about my cat. What did the eagle do to my cat? i never imagined this can ever happen. I reported to police about my lost cat, but they said there's nothing they can do in this. I now plan to get a new cat. How to avoid this tragedy from happening again?

Eagles are meat eaters. A cat is the same size as a rabbit, which is a common food item for an eagle. Of course he could take a cat, in the eagle's eyes it's just food. He would not have set the cat down to walk away, I'm sorry, your pet is dead.

Coyotes are a huge problem also, if you've got eagles, you've also got coyotes in your area, which will grab any small house pet they can (also for food).

Considering that red tail hawks AND great horned owls also eat rabbits and possums, those would be a threat to a cat also.

Keep your next cat indoors. It's the only way to keep them safe.

I'm so sorry to hear that an eagle got your cat. Eagles think of cats and small dogs as prey... so do owls. I know of someone who lost their cat in San Diego to an owl coming by and swiping it even though they were next to it.
PLEASE keep any future cat you get inside. This is the ONLY way to ensure its survival and a long life. All cats should be kept inside, even though they want to go out. An outdoor cat has an average life span of only a few years, but an indoor cat can live 15-20 years. I've worked with cat rescue groups that will only adopt out to owners who promise to keep their cat inside because there are SO many dangers to outdoor cats: wild animal eating them (like your case), getting hit by a car, catching a disease, getting poisoned by some psycho, tortured by psychos, etc. Cats can live a really happy life inside your home and never need to go outside.

p.s. I used to live in Alaska and know of an eagle that nested on top of a gas station that flew down and ate a small dog of a couple getting gas who let it (dog) out of their car for a minute. An eagle's talons are VERY strong and they've been known to carry off animals that weigh a lot more than you'd imagine.

I am really sorry that you lost your kitten this way. As to what happen to him, he became dinner for the eagle. Preventing it from happening again? They only way is to keep your cats inside. Chances are there is a nest nearby. If there is and eagles are prevalent in your area it could very well happen again with another cat. An eagles talons will lock onto it's pray, once the grab has been made, so your kitten was probably killed instantly and didn't suffer.

Oh my god...
T - T kitty....
I think kitty was eaten by the eagle. If you're letting another cat outside, I would stay close to him, the eagle might come back for more!( I really rather get a clawed by the eagle then have the eagle take my cat away)

many birds of prey often take cats as they closely resemble their natural prey- rabbits. as for what the eagle did to it...it ate it.
Now I am highly skeptical of this whole thing if indeed it was an eagle. Eagles mostly eat fish or carrion and they are not known to just dive for prey when humans are present and so close.
Hawks and Owls will take a cat though, but they are not known to snatch prey when humans are so close either.
Don't let your new cat outside if you don't want to take the chance of it being eaten

the eagle ate your cat unfortunately. An adult cat would be savvy enough to avoid this but a kitten needs supervision. An eagle will eat any animal small enough including other birds and small dogs.

same thing happened to me years ago. sadly your cat is most likely deceased now. a small cat is prey just like other small animals. you can keep this from happening by keeping your cat indoors. I wish I could say something more comforting but there's not much else to say. Perhpas your caught fought off the eagle and is somewhere far away, found a nice family and is living hapily ever after...perhaps.

Wow...sorry about your cat. That's really interesting...an eagle carrying a cat! You deserve a star. What you can do to stop future eagles from getting your future cats is to keep small cats under close supervision and possibly attach something shiny or flappy to their collar so that it blows in the wind and scares them birds. Or teach your cat martial arts...just kidding! Sorry about your cat.

I'm so sorry for you!!!
I believe the eagle's going to feed your kitty to its babies or something. But next time, when you walk your cat, always look for eagles and if one is above you, then pick your kitty up and kind of hide her in your coat.

I'm really really sorry. It's horrifying.
