My parents are pastors, and they are the kind who do not like receiving gifts, but are always the first to give them.
In the past, we have given them many things, from books, to things they need in their home. I think the best thing to do is to give them TIME OFF!!! Being a pastor is a 24 hour a day job, so time away is greatly needed.
Try contacting a local travel agency, and find out if they do "gift certificates" ... that way the Pastor can choose a trip of his choice, as well as the date. Accommodations will all be taken care of through the travel agency, and it will make it easy on your church when it comes to the planning!

Ah -- the ever present stewardship committees, bless their hearts!
It should be something nice for the pastor and his/her family to enjoy, like simple cash (always appreciated), or a gift certificate to a nice dinner, or a couple of nights for the pastor/spouse at a nice hotel so he/she can have a nice rest, with babysitting provided by church members if they have kids.
Another idea is several cds of the pastors favorite music style. Books are out, because he/she probably already has a professional allowance for that.
A year's supply of Starbucks gift cards so he/she can stop in on the way to the office?

Hows about a nice dinner for two at a nice restaurant. When its difficult to present a gift. Its sometimes easier to just do something simple. If this can not happen. Hows about a group of people gather at the pastors home. Do his yard work, clean the garage, and do nice things to make it just a special day for him. Maybe even have a picnic in his honor.

You see, this is not a simple question. It raises many questions. First, what does that church stand for? What is the value orientation of the Pastor? I know that some materially oriented Pastors secretly instigate members to tax all in the church to buy for them something like very expensive 4W drive cars, or buy houses for them in very high brow districts or sponsor them and their family for leisure trips overseas. But some spiritually minded Pastors would prefer to see a revived and enlivened church within this period. So where does your Pastor fall? If he is really a man of God, surprise him with a well organised and attended day or two of fasting and prayers, with an annointed preacher from outside, all arranged without his being aware of it till the D-day. But if he would rather accumulate wealth, over to you and him. Hearken to his apologists whom, sure, he would have by now planted in all committees to preach the gospel of give and it shall be given unto you good measure shaken ... and running over ...

What would be appreciated are things that he/she i'm not sure if you said it was a gentleman or a lady, can use possibly within the church. A lovely collection of books that could go within the church library or possibly a dvd set that could be used in bible study lessons.
A lot of times too a lovely gift could possibly be something along the lines of a piece of furniture for their office, something that's going to definately be used. Gift certificates are always a possibility (i don't usually enjoy them just because sometimes they're not as personal as I would like to be in my gift giving) good luck to you dearest and god bless you.

Digital Camera, Hand Held Computer, (Visor or Palm Pilot)
or just a gift certificate to a nice restaraunt that would pay for his meal as well as the family.

As a former Pastor, give him a few days away at a nice resort, and not have to preach the week he comes back.
