well, if u noticed, when u put ur arm staight out in font of u it is naturally at about a 20 degree angle, there wuz also a study done that showed ppl who had never fired a handgun in theyre life that learned to shoot it sideways had just as good if not better scores than the traditional shooters. so no its not just gangstas doin it, as a matter of fact whenever i draw a handgun in haste i always find it at about a 30 degree angle

People shoot sideways because they see it on television.
Just like after seeing the movie "Fast and the Furious" people thought they were race car drivers.

People that have never fired a gun before shoot like they see on television cause it is cool. I am afraid I would not believe any poll like that. It is not the way to shoot a gun. The sights are on the top of a gun for a reason. I hope all criminals shoot their guns sideways because it will give the good guys plenty of time to draw and shoot the idiots.

I am inclined to agree with most of what is presented here. It is a combination of movies and the thug lifestyle promoted on tv and by gangster rap. As far as the rest of your question goes
Any pistol with recoil would automatically make it non-ergonomic when shooting sideways because the the whole arm supporting the gun is twisted. Considering the fact that there are no sights on the side of the gun, I would doubt it would shoot as accurate holding it to the side as compared to the normal hold.
Plus, shooting in this manner at most of the ranges I go to would guarentee that you wouldn't be there very long. The range officers toss these people out because it is a clear lack of abilty to properly handle a firearm. The people that do this might as well scream "I am an accident waiting to happen".

Only the uninitiated hold guns sideways 'gansta' style. They think it looks... Cool! Let them go on thinking that. Wait until they actually fire them and they'll learn the hard way that they haven't re-invented shooting. You see a gun is held a certain way because guns tend to recoil and the natural bend of your arm (wrist & elbow) allows you to deal with the recoil. Hold a gun ackwardly and it might not even stay in your hand when you shoot it. It might jam. And unless you're at very close range you're not going to hit your intended target.
So let the bad guys just go on thinking they look sooo cool!
Best.

I think it is because when you shoot several rounds at a time, shooting sideways probably causes a little bit less muzzle rise. This would be an important consideration in situations where maximum range should be kept to a minimum in order to avoid collateral damage. Drive by shootings are a good example of such a situation, since a stray bullet from a 9mm, for example, could almost go to the other side of the 'hood, and maybe hit one of your homies.
Less acurate? Yeah, probably so, but when you're firing from a moving vehicle at close range, it's not so much a matter of aiming as it is of keeping the gun pointed in the right general direction.

Its because people see "gangstas" do it.These are the same people that think the desert eagle is the most powerful gun in the world. One interesting exception however.back at the start of the century, the Chinese noticed that sometimes their mauser c96 clones would jam. This is because the casings are ejected upwards and sometimes they would fall back into the ejection port.when they were close enough that they could sacrifice the accuracy, they would hold the gun sideways.another reason for this is because some of the c96s could shoot fully automatic and when held sideways, they had a sort of horizontal spray line effect.

my theory is that turning it sideways would keep the hot brass from hitting the shooter next to you in teh case of 2 or three shooters sticking their heads out of the window of a drive by car and maybe keep the brass from leaving the car? i dunno.
accuracy is definately affected.

They shoot sideways because they do not know any better and they think that they are cool. No, shooting sideways is less accurate.

One theory is improved ejection, less jams the other is to keep crappy guns from dropping there clips.accuracy is no good unless your necks broke or permanently tilted sideways.

Most are trying to copy their favorite movie star. It really has little effect on accuracy in some very extreme cases it could be required. If shooting around obstacles, like in competition, it may be necessary.
