First thing you need to do is look for swelling in the general area of the snake bite. Do you notice any discomfort in the dog? Is the dog showing any sign of inmobility? Is breathing difficult? If the answers are yes, these are signs that your dog may have been bitten by a venomous snake.
In this case. Do not waste any time. Get your dog to the veternarian, immediately. Make sure you keep the dog immobilized, warm, and everything quiet during transport.
If you are certain the snake was not venomous and he is not showing any of the signs above, then wash the snake wound thouroughly. If you are unable to identify the snake as venomous, then it is wise to take the animal to the veternarian just to be safe.

Normally people consider garden snakes are not dangerous but it is difficult to determine garden snakes or not. Some venomous snakes could enter to your garden without knocking. So, if your puppy got bitten by a snake, your better go to animal clinic or hospital. Take care and Good luck.

What state are you in? Just because it was in the garden ,doesn't mean it was a garden snake.Does the puppy have puncture wounds? If she does, then it was a venomous snake.Garter snakes have very small teeth and wouldn't have left more than a very small scrape. Also, watch for swelling, difficulty breathing or seizures. If the puppy develops any of these symptoms, then ruch her to a vet.

Your puppy will be ok, if it was a venomous snake, you would already have seen signs of it. Garter snake bites are harmless, other than the fact that they can hurt a little bit. I cant even imagine that it broke your dogs skin, I have been bitten more times than I can count on the soft skin of my hands and its more like scratches than anything. Calm down, your doggy is ok!!

99.9999999% of common garden snakes are non venomous and only bite as a way to escape...now if you were living in my area the common snake here is the Mojave Green and is very venomous and any animal bit is likely to die quickly.
You most likely would just keep the wound clean to keep any infection away.
