My family is going through a tough time financially lately and I was wondering if it is okay to give kids powdered milk. They are 15 months and 2 and a half years old. Any thoughts?

if you are struggling financially (as my family is) you should go to your local health department and apply for WIC which is pretty much vouchers to go to a grocery store and get certain items like milks, eggs, cheese, cereals and more. and go to your local human services department and apply for food stamps. it's all based on your family's income and expenses. some people may feel like these systems are for "poor people" or that they are mooching off the government. but the government uses tax payers money to provide these programs. so as long as you are paying taxes your just getting your money back right?

Yes, powdered milk will be fine. The 15 month old should have whole milk, but if you can't do it right now...just be sure he/she gets fat from other sources...peanut butter is a great way. You could also make some powdered milk and mix it with regular milk to help with the taste. Be sure it's really cold as that will help the taste too.

Also, as the above person mentioned, WIC is there to help you. Don't let anyone make you feel bad. That is what you have paid your taxes for all these years. If you qualify, utilize that resource. I worked for WIC for many years and most WIC participants are working parents that need help to make ends meet.

Good luck!!

Fifteen month olds need to be drinking whole milk and as far as I know (or have ever seen) you can only get powdered milk as skim milk. If you can get whole milk in powder form, I think it would be okay. Skim milk is fine for the 2 1/2 year old.

Yes, it's fine and will not hurt them in any way... It's better than always giving them juice.. They need the extra calcium if you can supplement with cheese.. My kids love mac n cheese so I make it really special and add some mixed veggies and extra cheddar to make it creamy.. If I have some leftover cooked ground beef I'll add that as well. I still have baby food left and I'll add a jar of some type of veggie puree to spagetti sauce or stew to add more vitamins/minerals.. Make sure they are getting what they need.. Good luck

it is about the same as skim milk, but the taste is a bit different so you may try flavoring it with a little vanilla. Short term it will probably not hurt them, my son drank it when he was about that age. Just make sure they are eating well, as it will not have the same fat content as other milk.
